Hair stylist of the stars is now grooming heads in Asheboro

ASHEBORO — There’s a new barber shop in town but it’s really “an upscale men’s grooming lounge.”

That’s the description given by owner and stylist Sheena Maness. She just opened Back Stage Barber Club upstairs at 109 North St., Asheboro.

Maness grew up here but spent a number of years in Nashville, working on the hair of “a lot of touring musicians.”

“We moved back from Nashville and I wanted to open a business here,” she said. By “we,” she includes her husband, Chris Maness.

While it’s called a men’s grooming lounge, Sheena Maness is quick to point out that women are also welcome.

But the interior is definitely designed for men, with such trappings as leather-looking barber stools, a cowhide rug and even a drawing of John Wayne. The southside windows offer a nice view of Sunset Avenue and Bicentennial Park.

The roomy interior has sofas and chairs, coffee tables, a book shelf and an ancient record player console that can play the selection of vinyl records on hand. Or, clients can bring their own records.

“It’s not just for haircuts but for the experience,” Maness said. “It’s a place for people to feel comfortable. It’s a welcome spot for the community.”

With a little encouragement, Maness may be talked into sharing stories about her experiences in Nashville.

The entrance from North Street is nondescript at this point but Maness said they’re working on signage with the city and the owner of the building. She hopes to eventually have a barber pole.

When entering from the sidewalk, clients need to go up the stairs and then take the door to the left, where they’ll be checked in.

The hours are Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
