Lumina Wine & Beer’s gone, but here comes Ashe & Vine

ASHEBORO — Take heart, Lumina Wine & Beer fans, Ashe & Vine is coming.

Andy and Lisa Doss are moving into the former Lumina location at 152 Sunset Ave. with plans to establish a wine bar that will include craft beers and spirits. 

The name, Ashe & Vine, refers to Gov. Samuel Ashe, who the City of Asheboro was named for and, of course, the fruit of the vine. 

The Dosses took time recently, after getting advice from a public health official, to talk about their plans. 

They are currently painting the interior, installing equipment and adding tables and chairs to the inside and patio areas. “It’s not a major remodel,” Andy said.

They’re hoping for a mid-October opening but will have the shop open during the Fall Festival on Oct. 3 for the public to look around and perhaps receive complimentary gifts.

Andy said they “want a place to sit and talk and be cozy with soft music playing. We’ll have live music occasionally on the patio. We’ll be open during events downtown.”

Beside ordering drinks from the bar, customers will also be able to purchase bottles to go. 

Andy said there will be wine tastings on Saturdays and beer tastings during the week. 

Both Andy and Lisa have a combined 30 years of experience in the industry. Andy owned a wine bar in Greensboro and Lisa, who is from Kansas, has worked in fine dining, distribution and retail.

In addition, their 5-year-old daughter Eleanor hopes to set up a lemonade stand onsite to make money for her college fund.

Asked how they chose the location for their wine bar, Andy said, “We like Asheboro and Lisa has friends here. Then we were given the opportunity.”

Lumina Wine & Beer closed this summer after some 17 years at the location under differing management.

Lisa said, “The first time we came here, we loved it.”

They said they had patronized Lumina when it was open.

Andy said they want to “work with the community and be a part of it.”

Plans are to have a ribbon cutting for the grand opening. The Dosses are involved with Downtown Asheboro, Inc., and the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce.

Projected hours for Ashe & Vine are Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 1 to 10 p.m. There may be other openings during special events.
