DAR Chapter launches Book Brigade

ASHEBORO — The Daughters of the American Revolution Col. Andrew Balfour Chapter recently completed their Book Brigade, a project in the making for approximately a year. Made possible by a $5,028 grant through America 250 NC, the Chapter wanted to provide educational opportunities and resources for our young generation to learn about the foundational truths in how our country started and became independent.

Once receiving the news of the grant award, Lisa Brown and Kathie Thompson of DAR Col. Andrew Balfour Chapter reached out to Samantha Martin with Asheboro Public Library for suggestions on a variety of books based on different reading levels and preferences. From the research that Sam conducted, they compiled a want list of 13 books to provide to the local schools.

Some 320 books were ordered to share with Asheboro City Schools, Randolph County School System and Uwharrie Charter Academy, as well as books for the county libraries. The Asheboro Public Library assisted in ordering the books, providing stickers for each book as the grant required, and storing the books until they could all be delivered. The Heart of North Carolina Visitors Bureau then provided the bags to deliver the books.
