ASHEBORO — One of Asheboro Mall’s longest-running stores is now holding a “Store Closing Sale.”
Claire’s, which came on board soon after what was then called Randolph Mall opened in 1982, is one of more than 1,100 stores across the nation in danger of closing its doors.
Claire's Holdings LLC, based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, announced in an Aug. 6 press release that “it has commenced voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware (the "U.S. Court") to maximize the value of its business. These proceedings will enable Claire's to immediately commence the monetization process for its assets to maximize value for the business, while continuing an active and comprehensive review of strategic alternatives, including discussions with potential strategic partners that began prior to the filings. …”
In that filing, Chris Cramer, CEO of Claire’s, said, “This decision is difficult, but a necessary one. Increased competition, consumer spending trends and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail, in combination with our current debt obligations and macroeconomic factors, necessitate this course of action for Claire's and its stakeholders. We remain in active discussions with potential strategic and financial partners and are committed to completing our review of strategic alternatives.”
An employee at the Asheboro Mall Claire’s store said the staff had been told the location would be closing but they were not given a date. All products are marked down by 40- to 60-percent off. Fixtures, furniture and equipment are also for sale.
Despite Cramer’s statement that the company is looking for a buyer, it seems evident that the local store is undergoing a sellout aimed at permanent closure.
It would be the second long-term store at the mall to close since the end of 2024 when Foot Locker shut its doors. Also, Rue 21 closed when the national parent company declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2024.
According to Claire's website, “Claire’s is a global brand powerhouse for self-expression, creating exclusive, curated and fun fashionable jewelry and accessories, and offering world-leading piercing services.”
Claire’s has been called “a mall staple for pre-teens thanks to its inexpensive jewelry and accessories.” Many young girls have had their initial ear piercings at Claire’s.
