Stacks of Support - Asheboro Kiwanis Pancake Day Fundraiser a Success

ASHEBORO — The smell of cooking pancake batter, sausage and coffee filled the air around the National Guard Armory in Asheboro last Tuesday as the Kiwanis Club hosted its annual Pancake Day fundraiser.

The 76th Annual Asheboro Kiwanis Club Pancake Day was held March 18. Dozens of volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of Asheboro and other local organizations spent the day cooking and serving a steady crowd.

The Kiwanis Club of Asheboro, part of the global Kiwanis International network, is driven by a mission to improve the world one child and one community at a time. “It’s hard to pick just one way the Kiwanis Club of Asheboro helps the community,” said longtime member Lynn Jones. “We’re involved in so many efforts that truly make a difference, especially for children and families.”

Locally, the club's efforts span education, youth development and community support. For more than 20 years, its Gift of Reading program has donated funds to the Randolph Partnership for Children to purchase books which they help to distribute to preschoolers at the Asheboro Christmas Parade. The club has also proudly sponsored American Legion Post 45’s baseball team for 65 years. Through its Children’s Shoe Program, the club provides new shoes to Asheboro City Schools students in need. In 2014, it established the Aktion Club — a Kiwanis-sponsored group for adults with developmental disabilities who complete monthly service projects. And each spring, the club awards multiple $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors to help them further their education.

The annual Pancake Day fundraiser serves as a major source of funding for the organization. Last year, it raised more than $15,000, which the Kiwanis Club uses to support the local community. While it’s too early to know the total amount raised from this year’s Pancake Day, Asheboro Kiwanis Pancake Day Chairperson Seth Cashion said the club expects to raise about the same amount, despite higher grocery prices.

“We used over 700 pounds of flour,” Cashion said in a message, extending his thanks to the community for its overwhelming support. “We would not be able to pull it off without all the volunteers who are always willing to give up their time. These funds will stay local and will help fund projects for the children and youth of Randolph County.”

The event was made possible thanks to a network of sponsors, Central Gas, Select Bank, Midstate Cremation & Funeral Services, Thomas Brothers Foods, Carolina Pharmacy, Sir Pizza, Uwharrie Investment Advisors, McArthur Tree Service, Randolph Electric Membership Corporation, Pugh Funeral Home, Gallimore Automotive, Warren Coble & Associates Inc., Prevo Drug, Advisors Financial Center, Delta Plumbing and Electrical Contractor, AVS Catering, Chick-fil-a, and Insurance Associates of the Triad.
