Wounded Warriors get help from Asheboro Marine Corps League

ASHEBORO — Wounded Marines at Camp Lejeune are getting help, thanks to the Asheboro Marine Corps League.

Steve Sugg, a member of the organization, said, “The Asheboro Marine Corps League sponsored a bowling session a few weeks ago to raise money for Wounded Warriors at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. One-hundred percent raised went to help wounded warriors, and if parents needed to stay in a hotel we provided them with a room.

“We do this every year and have been very successful in doing so.”

The funds raised totaled $2,200, all going to the Marines at Camp Lejeune.

Sugg said the local Marine Corps League is named after Johnny A. Williamson of Asheboro who was killed in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1983 when the barracks he was sleeping in was bombed.

Besides raising money for Wounded Warriors, the League also puts out flags during the Veterans Day week’s Field of Honor for those who have served in the military.

The Asheboro Marine Corps League meets from 6 to 8 p.m. every third Tuesday of each month at the National Guard Armory. A free meal is served to those in attendance.

Sugg said the League has Marines of all ages, approximately 40 members at present.
