August hike reveals Revolutionary War vet’s gravesite

ASHEBORO — Celebrate America 250 with a hike to Cooper Mountain Cemetery in the Birkhead Wilderness of the Uwharrie National Forest where a local veteran of the Revolutionary War is buried. 

The hike starts at Robbins Branch Trailhead in Asheboro and crosses Hannah’s Creek to Cooper Mountain. Enjoy this America 250 experience right here in Randolph County.

Date: Sunday, Aug. 9.

Where: Robbins Branch Trailhead at 5527 Lassiter Mill Road, Asheboro.

Time: Meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Farmer’s Market in Downtown Asheboro, 134 S. Church St., or meet at 2 p.m. at the Robbins Branch Trailhead.

Length: About 2.8 miles round trip from the trailhead.

Degree of Difficulty: This is a good summertime hike, all in the shade and with no steep climbs. Does involve a stream crossing. Moderate difficulty.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must be under control at all times.

Bring water and a walking stick, if needed. Dress appropriately for a summertime hike in the forest. Long pants are recommended. We will be fording a creek, so wear waterproof boots or shoes that you do not mind getting wet. 

If it is raining at the time of the hike, the hike will be cancelled. 

There is no cost to participate, and no pre-registration is needed. This hike is open to all who can hike this distance unaided.
