February hike: Slip Rock Mountain

ASHEBORO — What better way to look towards the Spring season than a hike to the NC Natural Heritage Site located at Camp Mundo Vista on the Camp Caraway Conference Center property?

Slip Rock Mountain has unusual plants adapted to the harsh rock surface and views of Caraway Mountain, Mt. Shepherd and the surrounding countryside. The site is protected with a conservation easement with the Piedmont Land Conservancy so it will be preserved in its natural state in perpetuity.

The hike takes place on Sunday, Feb. 8. Info to know:

Where: Camp Mundo Vista, across Caraway Mountain Road from the main Caraway Conference Center and Camp at 3140 Camp Mundo Vista Trail.

Time: 1:30 p.m. Meet at the Farmer’s Market in Downtown Asheboro, 134 S. Church St., to car caravan to the start of the hike. The hike will start at 2 p.m. from the parking lot of Camp Mundo Vista if you want to meet at the site.

Hike Length: Approximately 3 miles and should take about 2 hours.

Degree of Difficulty: This is a difficult hike due to the steep climb up the trail to Slip Rock Mountain overlook.

Also, this part of the trail is rocky with loose stones.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times.

Comments: Please dress appropriately for the weather. Wear comfortable closed toe shoes. Walking sticks are welcome due to loose stones on part of the trail. If it is raining at the time of the hike, it will be canceled. There is no cost to participate, and no pre-registration is needed. This event is open to all who can hike this distance unaided.
