ASHEBORO — Yes, that’s taking a little license from a famous line by Humphrey Bogart’s character Rick Blainein in this month’s Thrifty Thursday installment, the 1942 classic “Casablanca.” But seeing as Elvis had already left the building in January’s offering “King Creole,” you work with what you’ve got.
The graphic above explains how the annual Thrifty Thursday offering by the City of Asheboro and accompanying sponsors works — mainly, a free outing for local seniors and an inexpensive one for others who want to join in. All movies are PG and run times are included above.
So here we’ll just take a quick snapshot of what each movie offers:
FEBRUARY 5
“Casablanca” — Starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid.
Plot: A cynical expatriate American cafe owner struggles to decide whether or not to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis in French Morocco.
MARCH 5
“Baby Boom” — Starring Diane Keaton, Sam Shepard, Harold Ramis.
Plot: The life of super-yuppie J.C. is thrown into turmoil when she inherits a baby from a distant relative.
APRIL 2
“Barefoot In The Park” — Starring Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Charles Boyer.
Plot: Conservative young lawyer Paul Bratter marries the vivacious Corie Banks, but their highly passionate relationship descends into discord when they rent their first apartment, a run-down five-flight NYC walk-up with eccentric neighbors.
MAY 7
“Francis” — Starring Donald O’Connor, Patricia Medina, Zasu Pitts, Tony Curtis.
Plot: During World War II, a junior American Army officer, Lt. Peter Stirling, gets sent to the psychiatric ward whenever he insists that an Army mule named Francis speaks to him.
JUNE 4
“To Hell And Back” — Starring Audie Murphy, Marshall Thompson, Charles Drake.
Plot: The true WWII story of Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier in U.S. history. Based on the autobiography of Audie Murphy who stars as himself in the film.
JULY 2
“Raiders of the Lost Ark” — Starring Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, Alfred Molina.
Plot: In 1936, archaeologist Indiana Jones is tasked by Army Intelligence to help locate a legendary ancient power, the Ark of Covenant, before the Nazis get it first.
AUGUST 6
“Secondhand Lions” — Starring Haley Joel Osment, Michael Caine, Robert Duvall.
Plot: Fourteen-year-old Walter Caldwell’s irresponsible mother Mae sends him to live with his bachelor uncles, Hub and Garth, so that she can go on yet another husband-hunting trip.
SEPTEMBER 3
“Arsenic and Old Lace” — Starring Cary Grant, Priscilla Lane, Raymond Massey
Plot: Mortimer Brewster, a Brooklyn writer of books on the futility of marriage, risks his reputation after he decides to tie the knot. Things grow complicated when he learns that his beloved maiden aunts Abby and Martha are serial murderers.
OCTOBER 1
“Strangers On A Train” — Starring Farley Granger, Robert Walker, Ruth Roman.
Plot: A psychopath tries to forcibly persuade a tennis star to agree to his theory that two strangers can get away with murder in his plan to kill the other’s most-hated person.
NOVEMBER 5
“Ordinary Angels” — Starring Hilary Swank, Alan Ritchson, Emily Mitchell.
Plot: Inspired by the true story of a hairdresser who single-handedly rallies a community to help a widowed father save his critically ill daughter.

“Holiday Inn” — Starring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Marjorie Reynolds
