Honoring Our Veterans Cruisin’ to feature Seymour Johnson AFB flyover on Sept. 13

ASHEBORO — A flyover of military planes from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will highlight the 12th Annual Honoring Our Veterans Cruisin’.

The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, at Wayne Thomas Chevrolet, 1400 E. Dixie Drive, Asheboro. A prayer, flag-raising ceremony and the Pledge of Allegiance will kick things off at 9 a.m. with the Southwestern Randolph High School Jr. ROTC presenting the colors.

Meanwhile, registration of cars and other vehicles on display will be ongoing from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be a silent auction and ticket sales for a Brothers in Arms quilt by Brenda Thomas from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Also, a 50/50 drawing will be from 8 a.m. to 1:50 p.m.

All veterans of the military are encouraged to wear their dog tags.

They will be asked to meet in front of Wayne Thomas Chevrolet at 11:45 a.m. to form up for the Veterans’ March. World War II veterans should go to the stage at 11:45 p.m. All other veterans will then be led by CSM Fred Almazan at 11:55 a.m.

After a moment of silence honoring the memory of fallen veterans, there will be the playing of the National Anthem followed by the Seymour Johnson flyover.

At 12:05 p.m., Harry Brower Sr., commander of the Randolph County Veterans Council, will speak on the struggles of veterans. His speech will be followed by music from the Redline Band from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. During that time, at 1 p.m., there will be the playing of “God Bless the USA.”

The silent auction will close at 1:45 p.m. and the drawing for the quilt will be held at 1:50 p.m. At 2 p.m., all drivers will move to the stage for the drawing of an Esso reproduction gas pump, courtesy of Cox General Store. 

“Taps” will be played at 2:05 p.m. and the cruisin’ vehicles will line up at 2:10 p.m. for the drive to Victory Junction.

All proceeds from Honoring Our Veterans Cruisin’ go to the Randolph County Veterans Council, an organization that serves the veterans of Randolph County.
