Tea with Seagrove Potters is Saturday in Seagrove

SEAGROVE — Five Seagrove pottery shops have partnered with Carriage House Tea of Asheboro and Seagrove Cafe to create a fun-filled day of shopping and tea tasting.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Blue Hen, Eck McCanless, Dean and Martin, From the Ground Up and Thomas potteries welcome visitors to Tea with Seagrove Potters.

Each shop will feature iced tea from Carriage House Tea and pastries from Seagrove Cafe, as well as homemade treats for visitors to sample. 

See the latest wares from the kilns, visit with the potters, and learn about how they use their wares to bake, brew, cook, serve and decorate. Shops are located along Pottery Highway NC 705 and adjacent roads.

This is a free event and open to all ages. 

Each shop has its own unique style of pottery and will feature different items. Visitors can expect a large selection of teapots, teacups, tumblers, pitchers and other serving ware, along with decorative pieces.

Malpass Brothers return to Troy for Aug. 7 concert

ASHEBORO — Enjoy classic country music back when country WAS country? 

Then mark your calendar for Friday, Aug. 7, when the Malpass Brothers will return to the James Garner Center in Troy for an evening of great musical entertainment and comedy. 

Brothers Chris and Taylor will take the stage at 7 pm in the James Garner Center, located at 210 Burnette Street in Troy.

“I’m excited to have the Malpass Brothers back in Troy. This is a group I get asked to bring back each year,” promoter Jeff Branch said. 

“These guys are entertaining and a true class act that all ages love.”

“Super excited to be coming back to Troy,” Chris Malpass said. “Jeff Branch is a class promoter. We have worked this venue many times and it’s always great.

“We hope to see all the folks from Troy and surrounding counties there. It will be a night of classic country and gospel with some laughs. We can’t wait to see you all.”

Tickets are $35 reserved, $30 at door, and $10 for kids 6-12.

‘Secondhand Lions’ is this month’s Thrifty Thursday flick

ASHEBORO — The monthly Thrifty Thursday Movie at Sunset Theatre will be on Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. The movie — “Secondhand Lions” — is carried by a star-studded cast, including Robert Duvall, Michael Caine, Haley Joel Osment and Kyra Sedgwick among others, in this coming of age family comedy. Tickets are $5 and include a popcorn and drink. Patrons 50 and older get the ticket for free thanks to local sponsors. 

Randleman, Archdale hold outdoor Aug. 7 events

As summer begins to close, two county towns continue to keep fun alive on Aug. 7.

Randleman will hold another in its Market & Music Concert Series in the downtown Commerce Square location. Vendors and food trucks arrive for a 5 p.m. start, and North Tower will be the musical guest and hit the stage from 7 to 10 p.m.

In Archdale, it’s another outdoor movie night in Creekside Park, this time showing “Dogman.” Concessions will be available for purchase, but the movie is free. Just bring a chair or blanket. Check today’s calendar on 5A for more details on both events.

Phatt City takes stage for Sunday Night Concert Aug. 9

ASHEBORO — Another Asheboro-sponsored Sunday Night Concert Series event takes place on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. when Phatt City comes to town to end the weekend right. The nine-member musical group plays beach music, R&B and dance hits. The concert is outdoors in Bicentennial Park in downtown Asheboro and free to attend. Bring your own chair or blanket. Food trucks will be onsite.

Next HGCB at Starworks set for Aug. 13

STAR — Starworks is bringing back its popular Hot Glass, Cold Beer series for a special summer edition on Thursday, Aug. 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m. This family-friendly evening invites guests to experience the artistry of glass in a new way with live flameworking demonstrations, local music, barbecue, craft beverages and a relaxed summer atmosphere.

Unlike traditional glassblowing demonstrations in the hot shop, this event spotlights the intricate art of flameworking, also known as lampworking, where artists use a torch to shape molten glass into detailed sculptures, vessels and functional objects.

The evening’s featured demonstration will be led by guest artist Nicholas Christensen, a Wisconsin born, Winston Salem-based glass artist whose work combines technical precision with imaginative design. Guests will have the opportunity to watch Christensen transform simple glass rods into finished works during a live 90-minute demonstration beginning at 5:30 p.m.

One more time: Rock’n the Park’s final gig for the summer

ASHEBORO — The fourth and final Rock’n the Park event will take place in Bicentennial Park in downtown Asheboro on Friday, Aug. 14, with September: A Tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire. Opening act for the group will be Southern Chill, which will play from 6:30 to 7:30 with the main act to follow around 8 p.m. Bring a chair or blanket for the free outdoor concert. Concert-goers can also enjoy food and drinks from downtown restaurants and bars or a variety of food trucks onsite. 

Summer’s last Eastern Randolph Farmers market Aug. 15

RAMSEUR — A monthly summer event that includes a farmers market in Ramseur returns Aug. 15 to Millstone Creek Orchards at 506 Parks Crossroads Church Road in Ramseur. The free event includes fresh produce and food items, handmade crafts, an outdoor adventure, plus optional u-pick fruit and other options at Millstone Creek Orchards, like live music, fishing, picnic opportunities, a kids playground and more. 

Next Quiet Day at the NC Zoo will be on Tuesday, Aug. 17

ASHEBORO — On the third Tuesday of each month, the North Carolina Zoo sets aside a Quiet Day for visitors need a quiet environment to enjoy a social setting or visitors who just want to visit the Zoo on a day without large crowds, loudspeakers turned off to announcements and music. It’s just you and the animals. For those who need them, sensory bags are free for checkout at the Guest Services Office or at Kidzone. Designated quiet areas are also marked throughout, and Quiet sensory play experiences are available in the Kidzone from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Regular Zoo entry fee is charged.
