RCSO unveils new book ‘Red’s Great Adventure!” as K9 Unit Fundraiser

ASHEBORO — The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office has released “Red’s Great Adventure!” — a new book created to honor K9 Red and support the K9 Unit through fundraising sales.

An RCSO press release says the book was created to commemorate Red’s most memorable adventure and captures her service, teamwork, perseverance and love. While the story is not exact in chronological order, it is close to what happened and reflects the events surrounding one of Red’s most memorable experiences.

Last July, Red went missing during a severe storm after a kennel latch malfunction. In the days that followed, the community rallied by searching and sharing updates until Red was safely located and returned home. The response reflected the strong bond between Red, the Sheriff’s Office and the community Red serves.

One hundred of the books were donated by PIP Printing to help support the K9 Unit. Nine books are being donated to the Randolph County Public Library so each library location’s children’s section will have one copy, and one copy will be placed in the Randolph Room for historical purposes.

A copy of the rest can be obtained for $10 (includes tax) cash or check, available through Randolph County Sheriff’s Office locations, any RCSO K9 Handler and at RCSO community events. All proceeds benefit the K9 Unit.

Bantum Rooster puts on free concert July 26

ASHEBORO — In an annual giveback to the community event, Bantum Rooster will hold a free concert at Bicentennial Park on Sunday, July 26. The concert also serves as a donation point for canned goods for local pantries and free hotdogs are passed out to patrons prior to the concert, which begins at 7 p.m. 

The hotdog giveaway begins at 6:30. Bring your canned goods in bags or boxes to be delivered by the band to Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in Asheboro. And bring a chair to sit back and enjoy the outdoor concert from this popular local band.

Two cruise-in events set for July 25

ASHEBORO — How lucky is this? A pair of cruise-ins will grace the area on Saturday, July 25, with one in Randleman from 9 a.m. to noon and another in Asheboro from 6 to 10 p.m.. Find both items in today’s calendar section on page 5A for more information as they are two different kind of events.

Stepping Into The Craft’s final day is Saturday

SEAGROVE — While Seagrove pottery shops are open throughout the year, many studios have had special events taking place during the month of July for Stepping into the Craft – Summers in Seagrove, an event taking place each Saturday in July. The last Saturday is July 25. Visitors can expect anything from kiln openings, demonstrations, hands-on experiences in clay and more. Annual Zooland AACA Car Show at Bicentennial Park

ASHEBORO — The local Zooland Region AACA organization will hold its annual car show on Saturday, Aug. 1, at Bicentennial Park in downtown Asheboro. Cheryl ‘The Pearl’ Cook guest of honor for MTTS Festival

ASHEBORO — Ty Brueilly’s 3rd Annual Mightier Than The Sword Awards at Sunset Film Festival, scheduled this year for Aug. 7-9 at Sunset Theatre in downtown Asheboro, will have a guest of honor this year: Cheryl ‘The Pearl’ Cook, from the legendary first ever female hip hop group, ‘The Sequence.’ 

The group is known for its hit “Funk You Up” which reached No. 15 on Billboard charts in the early 1980s. During the festival, on Friday, Aug. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m., Cook will have a filmed sit-down conversation on stage of the Sunset Theatre with Greensboro area hip hop legend Mr. Rozzi followed by a Meet & Greet in the lobby of the Sunset Theatre from 5 to 6 p.m. 

Cook will then host the opening night concert, also at the Sunset Theatre beginning at 8:30 p.m. featuring performances by Chad Wayne, Kal-Tek, Sean Haitz, Barry Yow, Donna Hughes & Mr. Rozzi with Hiromenbipp & J. The Artist.
