MFC Week 2: Randleman walk, hike on Ridge’s Mountain

You can still register for the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge at www.healthycommunitiesA3.com! There is no cost to participate, no age limits and all are welcome. Participate as part of a team or as an individual. During this six-week challenge, Special Community Events are planned each week. This is an all-activity challenge. 

Saturday walk, Oct. 10

Mayor’s Walk — Randleman Deep River Greenway on the Deep River State Trail.

Where: Meet at the Trailhead parking lot of the Randleman Greenway, part of the Deep River State Trail at 117 Presnell St, just off Main St. in downtown Randleman.

Time: 9 a.m.

Walk Length: Approximately 3 miles along the scenic Deep River.

Dogs: Welcome on a leash at all times.

Mayor Gary Betts of the City of Randleman will lead the walk. County Commissioner Hope Haywood will assist. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for a fall weather walk. In case of bad weather, the walk will be cancelled. There is no cost to participate, and no pre-registration is needed. This event is open to all who can walk this distance unaided.

Sunday hike, Oct. 11

Sunday Hike — Ridge’s Mtn State      Natural Preserve.

Enjoy a hike at the NC Zoo’s Ridge’s Mountain State Natural Preserve featuring upland pools, Monadnock forest and large boulders in this natural heritage site of State significance. 

Location: Meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Farmer’s Market in Downtown Asheboro, 134 S. Church St. to car caravan to the site OR meet at Ridge’s Mountain SNP at 504 Summit Court, Asheboro.

Time: 1:30 p.m. at the Farmer’s Market in Asheboro or 2 p.m. at the parking lot at Ridge’s Mtn SNP

Hike Length: 2 miles. Optional: 1 mile round trip to Southern Entrance.

Degree of Difficulty: The natural surface trail is rocky and steep in parts. Moderate to strenuous.

Dogs: Dogs are NOT allowed because it is a nature preserve with fragile areas.
