Museum Matters: August meeting focuses on Duke University’s history in Randolph County

RANDLEMAN — August 16th is the date for St. Paul’s August meeting, and the program for this month is about the origin of what is now known as Duke University. And yes, the origin of Duke University is in Randolph County in the Trinity area.

Our speaker for this program is Rusty Parsons, who will introduce us to the founder of what was first known as Union College, established in 1841. In 1851, it became known as Normal College before being renamed once again as Trinity College in 1859. 

The school was organized by a group of Methodists and Quakers under the leadership of the Reverend Brantley York. In 1853, the state permitted the granting of degrees.

Incidentally, the Reverend York was responsible for establishing several elementary and high schools in the state, including one in Randleman.
