On May 17: Part 3 of 3 of a series on the history of St. Paul

Peggy Woodlief

RANDLEMAN — St. Paul’s May meeting is scheduled for the 17th at 2 p.m. The program will be the third (and last) in the series concerning the history of St. Paul.

The first of the series was presented by Don Farlow and dealt with the actual building of the church and its early history. The second program was by Andy Compton who explained the work of restoration and how one discovers the original painting and design so that it can be restored to its original appearance.

Sunday’s program will be presented by Suzanna Malliett, the Director of Korner’s Folly Foundation. She will “explore Korner’s artistic career through the lens of his surviving work from early decorative painting at St. Paul’s to the richly layered interiors of Korner’s Folly and the broader body of portraits, landscapes, and design work he produced. ... Together these works reveal Korner not only as an artist but as a designer of environments who used paint, pattern, and illusion to shape how people experienced space.”

As you approach the church, you will see a recently placed bell associated with the old Commonwealth Hosiery Mill that was situated along Deep River. This was donated to the museum by John Freeze, who has long supported the museum. There will be more about the bell in next month’s column.

We look forward to seeing you. If it’s your first visit, find us at the corner of High Point and Stout Streets.
