ASHEBORO N.C. (ACME NEWS) — Randolph County will observe the 24th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a series of memorial events on Wednesday, September 11. From community ceremonies and a high school assembly to a blood drive and the Asheboro Fire Department’s annual 9.11-mile ruck, residents will have multiple opportunities to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost, recognize first responders, and remember local heroes.
On Wednesday, September 11, at 1 p.m., the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Services will host the second annual 9/11 Patriot Day Ceremony. The event, held on the lawn of the Sheriff’s Office at 727 McDowell Road (New Century Drive), Asheboro, is free and open to the public. This year’s guest speaker will be Dr. Robert S. Shackleford Jr., retired president of Randolph Community College and a former U.S. Military Chaplain (1986–2009).
The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Randolph County Emergency Services building, located at 760 New Century Drive, Asheboro.

Eastern Randolph High School (390 Eastern Randolph Road, Ramseur) will host its annual 9/11 memorial assembly at 9 a.m. on September 11 at Burton Cates Stadium. Parents and members of the public are invited to attend this free event, which typically includes appearances from local first responders, a guest speaker, and a moment of silence to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001.
The Asheboro Fire Department will once again host its annual 9.11-mile memorial ruck through the City of Asheboro, beginning and ending at Asheboro Fire Station 1, located at 401 S. Church Street. Check-in starts at 9:00 a.m. with step-off at 9:30 a.m., and no pre-registration is required—participants can simply check in upon arrival. Open to all ages, the event serves as a tribute to those lost on September 11, 2001, while also honoring local fallen heroes and loved ones. Find out more about this event on Facebook.
