Keaton’s Place site for OD Awareness Vigil Aug. 28

ASHEBORO —Keaton’s Place will host an Overdose Awareness Memorial Vigil in front of its office at 120 Worth St. in Asheboro at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28. 

The gathering to acknowledge individuals who lost their lives to addiction will include luminaries, a musical tribute and words of remembrance from those who wish to share. The event is free and open to the public.

Those who want to add a name to a luminary but cannot attend should send the name to susan@keatonsplace.org.

Asheboro Men’s Shelter holds open house Friday

ASHEBORO — The retooled local men’s shelter is having on open house on Friday, Aug. 29, from 12 to 2 p.m. and the public is invited.

Formerly the Shelter of Hope, the shelter is now known as Place of Grace and is operating under the direction of a new executive director, Priscilla Ward.

The open house will include a free spaghetti lunch and live music.

The shelter is located at 133 W. Wainman Ave., Asheboro.

Food Truck Championships in Randleman on Sept. 6

RANDLEMAN — Get your taste buds ready for another round of the North Carolina Food Truck State Championship in Randleman. 

The 12th annual event will again be held in Randleman, this year on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

 Many food trucks will line the street  in Downtown Randleman’s Commerce Square for not only foodies’ pleasure but for competition in a variety of categories with trophies, prize money and bragging rights on the line. Winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m.

Farm fresh vendors open up that morning in the Timken Farmers Market, and then live music begins late morning and continues throughout the day. This year’s bands include:

■ 11 a.m. —Brothers King.

■ 1:30 p.m. — Bantum Rooster. 

■ 4 p.m. — Big Time Shine Band. 

■ 7 p.m. — Gump Fiction.

Admission is free, but food prices vary from truck to truck.

Final 2025 Sunday concert: Eric & the Chill Tones

ASHEBORO — Sunday, Sept. 7, marks the end of the Summer Concert Series in Asheboro for the summer of 2025.

The final guest will be a return band, Eric & the Chill Tones.

A recent winner of the Greensboro News & Record’s Reader’s Choice Awards for favorite local band, the group plays beach music and other favorites from various genres. It’s led by local weatherman Eric Chilton.

The Chill Tones will be on stage from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Bicentennial Park in downtown Asheboro. Bring your own chair or blanket for this outdoor event.

Admission is free. Food trucks will be on site.

John Conlee visits Liberty Showcase on Sept. 6

LIBERTY — John Conlee will be the musical guest at Liberty Showcase Theater on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Tickets range from $43 to $59 online, including fees. They are available at https://www.thelibertyshowcase.com.

Between 1978 and 2004, Conlee charted a total of 32 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including seven No. 1 hits and 14 more in the Top Ten. Showtime is 7 p.m. at the Liberty Showcase Theater, located at 101 S. Fayetteville St. in Liberty.

The event kicks off a busy September with these acts also on the weekends docket:

Sept. 13 — A tribute to George Jones & Tammy Wynette by husband and wife country duo Alyssa & Wayne Brewer

Sept. 20 — The Malpass Brothers.

Sept. 27 —The Bellamy Brothers.

Victory Junction’s annual Run to Victory Sept. 13

RANDLEMAN — Victory Junction will host its annual Run to Victory on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 a.m. on the camp’s grounds, inviting runners, walkers, rollers and strollers to help fuel life-changing camp experiences for children living with complex medical and physical needs.

Registration is $35 for the 5K or $25 for the Fun Run. All participants get an event T-shirt and goodie bag.

Awards are presented to the top three overall finishers and top two in each age group.

Songwriter Sundays continue at Zimmerman’s

TRINITY — Zimmerman Vineyards is continuing its Songwriter Sunday series with JT Horne as the scheduled musical guest for Aug. 31 and Monica Tews on Sept. 7.

Admission is free for the local concerts on the terrace at the winery, located at 1428 Tabernacle Church Road. Wine can be purchased onsite as well as some food.

Others on tap this month include the Brown Mountain Lightning Bugs on Sept. 14, Dean & Riley on Sept. 21 and Greg Williams & Joseph Miller on Sept. 28.
