Asheboro Police Arrest 15 in Sweep of Homeless Encampment

ASHEBORO — The Asheboro Police Department conducted a sweep of a homeless encampment last Friday, resulting in the arrest of 15 individuals.

The operation targeted an encampment in the 1300 block of East Dixie Drive. According to police, the Street Crimes Unit, VICE/Narcotics Unit, Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Professional Standards, Special Operations, and the Community Resource Team collaborated to address chronic trespassing and littering in the area.

Authorities said they had previously warned individuals at the site in December, advising them to vacate the property and remove their belongings.

Around 7 a.m., approximately 25 officers entered the encampment and arrested those found in tents on the property. Police reported large amounts of trash at the site and seized a firearm, suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

The arrested individuals were transported to the Randolph County Jail, processed, and issued written promises to appear in court. The magistrate granted them until Jan. 12 to remove their belongings from the property.

On Jan. 13, as cleanup efforts began, officers found four individuals—Benjamin Brownie, Robert Jordan, Justin Crabtree, and Leanne Suits—had returned to the property. They were charged with misdemeanor trespassing and violation of a court order. All were held without bond.

The department says the operation is part of the Asheboro Police Department’s ongoing efforts to address trespassing and environmental concerns related to homeless encampments in the area.
