ASHEBORO, N.C. — An 82-year-old woman who was critically injured Monday after being struck by a vehicle on N. Fayetteville St. has died.
On Monday, Nov. 4, at approximately 5:56 p.m., Asheboro police, Asheboro fire, and Randolph County EMS responded to the intersection of N. Fayetteville St. and W. Salisbury St. after receiving a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
According to the Asheboro Police Department, 82-year-old Naureen Nitardy of Asheboro was attempting to cross the street when she was hit by a 2001 GMC Sierra. She was taken to Randolph Hospital, and UNC AirCare transported her from the Randolph Health helipad to an out-of-county medical facility. Police described her injuries as life-threatening.
The Asheboro Police Department’s Traffic Investigation/Reconstruction Unit stated that neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the incident.
Although police initially reported Tuesday that Nitardy's condition was not considered life-threatening, she died on Wednesday at UNC Hospital.
Nitardy was a well-known figure in the community, actively participating in the Randolph Arts Guild and the Randolph County Senior Adult Association. In 2020, she was recognized as a member of the Randolph Rhinestones, the county's first senior cheer team, as highlighted by Senior Living Quarterly Magazine.
No charges have been filed against the elderly driver at this time.
