LIBERTY, N.C. — Starting next week, northbound traffic on U.S. 421 will be shifted to a temporary detour to allow construction of two new bridges, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
According to a press release from N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT), northbound traffic on U.S. 421 at the intersection of Starmount Road, near mile marker 186, will be detoured starting the morning of Dec. 19, as a contractor for NCDOT begins construction on new bridges and median improvements.
The detour will redirect drivers around the work zone while crews from Ames Construction carry out the project. The traffic shift is part of a broader effort to enhance the U.S. 421 interchange, which recently saw the completion of work at Julian Airport Road, north of the Starmount Road intersection.
Construction crews recently completed work on the new interchange at Julian Airport Road north of the Starmount Road intersection.
No official end date for the detour has been announced, with the press release stating the detour will remain in place until further notice. NCDOT officials say motorists should follow signs for the detour, and exercise caution near the construction area.
