ASHEBORO, N.C. — A former Randolph County school employee was arrested last week on charges of felony sex offenses involving a student, stemming from an incident nearly two decades ago.
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office began its investigation in January 2023 after receiving a report from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI).
According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, the allegations involved an unidentified juvenile victim and a former Randolph County Schools employee who left the district on June 15, 2006. After identifying the victim and completing their investigation, detectives charged 50-year-old Gregory Winton Simmons with three felony counts of sex offenses with a student.
The arrest warrant alleges that Simmons, a former teacher at Randleman High School, had intercourse with a female student in August 2005.
Court records indicate that in June of this year, Simmons pleaded guilty in Moore County to third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. As part of his sentence, he was placed on supervised probation, required to register as a sex offender, and ordered to undergo psychiatric or psychological counseling.
On Nov. 25, 2024, Simmons was arrested in Moore County and transported to the Moore County Detention Center, where he was served the warrant from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office. He is being held on a $500,000 secured bond.
