ASHEBORO – Five people, including two juveniles charged as adults, have been arrested in connection with a March shooting that injured one person and damaged several apartments and vehicles on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Asheboro police said Tuesday.
On March 15, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Investigators determined that two apartments and three vehicles had been struck by gunfire.
Later that night, police were notified that a man had arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower leg. The victim, identified as 19-year-old Ricardo Castaneda of Staley, was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.
Investigators said evidence and witness statements indicated multiple firearms were used, and that two groups were shooting at each other in what is believed to be a targeted dispute.
The investigation led officers to execute a search warrant at the scene, resulting in the seizure of several cellphones and a backpack belonging to a 17-year-old. The backpack contained ammunition and documents in the juvenile’s name.
On April 10, detectives obtained arrest warrants for five individuals, each facing multiple felony charges, including attempted murder.
Those charged are:
- Jayden Edward Maines, 18
- Yosef Reyes-Gonzalez, 18
- Ricardo Castaneda, 19
- Cayden Ramos, 17, (charged as an adult)
- Jaden McClain, 16, (charged as an adult)
Each suspect is charged with felony conspiracy, four counts of attempted first-degree murder, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and two counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property.
On April 10, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Apprehension Team arrested Reyes-Gonzalez and Castaneda at addresses outside Asheboro city limits. On April 11, the same team located and arrested Maines, also outside city limits. All three were held without bond due to the nature of the charges.
On April 15, Asheboro Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Patrol Division arrested McClain and Ramos without incident. Both were also held without bond.
