ASHEBORO, N.C.(ACME NEWS) — Asheboro police responded to a home on Oakmont Drive Tuesday after a resident discovered what appeared to be a hand grenade in a flower bed while doing yardwork.
Officers arrived and immediately secured the area, evacuating nearby residents as a precaution. The Greensboro Police Department’s Hazardous Devices Team was called to assist and later removed the device for further examination.
Authorities said the grenade will be X-rayed to determine whether it is an active explosive or a replica. As of Tuesday evening, Asheboro Police had not been notified of the results.
This is not the first time a grenade has been found at the same residence. Last year, officers responded to a similar call when family members cleaning out the home after a loved one’s death discovered another hand grenade. That device was later determined to be inert and contained no explosives.
Police say there is no ongoing danger to the public.
