ASHEBORO - Forecasters are advising residents in Randolph County to be aware of increased fire danger today, and the possibility of freezing rain Monday morning.
An arctic high-pressure system is bringing cold, dry conditions today, with gusty winds of 20-25 mph from the west-northwest and relative humidity levels between 25 and 30 percent. These conditions create an elevated risk for adverse fire behavior. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
Tonight, temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s. On Sunday afternoon, a storm system moving in from the west will bring rain to the area. With cold ground temperatures, there is a slight risk of freezing rain in the northern Piedmont and near the NC/VA border early Monday morning.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Raleigh say they expect freezing rain may occur between 3 AM and 7 AM Monday in these areas, with a light glaze of ice possible on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses. However, most precipitation will fall as rain, and conditions will improve quickly after sunrise as temperatures rise above freezing.
In Randolph County, the chance of freezing rain is very low, but residents are still encouraged to exercise extra caution, especially on bridges, which freeze before roads.
Safety Tips:
- Avoid driving early Monday morning or give yourself some extra time.
- Exercise extra caution on bridges and untreated roads.

Conditions are expected to improve quickly after sunrise Monday as temperatures rise and the rain moves out of the area.
