Repairs Underway After Early Morning Water Main Break in Asheboro

ASHEBORO — Crews are working to repair a broken water main in Asheboro that sent water spraying over 30 feet into the air early this morning.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., Randolph County 9-1-1 received multiple calls reporting a water main break on Tucker Street, with some callers noting that water was spraying onto power lines and a nearby home. Asheboro Fire & Rescue responded to the scene, and the City’s Public Works department was notified.

When emergency crews arrived, they found a large hole in the street just before the intersection with Cross Street, where water was spraying more than 30 feet into the air.

City officials confirmed that repairs are underway. "Crews will remain on-site until repairs are complete today," a public works representative said by phone earlier today.

The cause of the break is still unclear, but officials noted that factors like weather, aging pipes, and shifting ground can contribute to water main failures. According to the city's website, "Cold weather, extreme heat, and temperature fluctuations can cause changes in the soil around pipes, creating pressure that may result in a break."
