Residents turn out to Read in

More than 100 people showed up for a Read-In at the Asheboro Public Library on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026. The read-in was a silent protest in support of the Randolph County Library Board of Trustees,

the entirety of whom were dismissed by Randolph County Commissioners over the board’s decision not to move a children’s book about a trans boy from the children’s section to another part of the library. Participants at Saturday’s Read-In sat and read in the library between 10 a.m.-noon. Commissioners are expected to meet later this month to reform the board with new guidelines. County Commissioner chairman Darrell Frye said on Dec. 11 that there will be new board members appointed and that the bylaws governing the board’s action will be rewritten as part of a legal process. The next scheduled meeting of the Library Board of Trustees, originally scheduled for January, has been postponed until at least February.

Meetings are held at the Asheboro Public Library.
