Update on US 220 Business construction

ASHEBORO — Local drivers will soon see improvements to US 220 Business just south of the US 64 bridge. Work is being done by the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) that will allow left turns from US 220 onto Atlantic Avenue and Country Club Road.

Cary Fine, NCDOT resident engineer, said dedicated left turn lanes will allow southbound drivers to turn left onto Atlantic Avenue and northbound drivers to turn left onto Country Club Road. For years, concrete islands along this section of road have prevented such left turns.

In addition, plans are to add a right-turn lane to Ridge Street at the intersection with US 220 Business.

With warmer weather in the spring, Fine said, US 220 Business will be resurfaced from Dixie Drive (US 64) to Anchor Drive, across from the road to Randolph County Public Health and the offices of the Randolph County School System.

Another project, which should be completed by presstime, is replacement of a storm drain pipe under US 220 Business as well as upgrades to drainage. That work had required slowdowns to traffic.
