Weekend Gas Explosion Damages Two Restaurants, No Injuries

ASHEBORO — A suspected gas explosion late Saturday night damaged two restaurants at West Pointe Village shopping center, though no injuries were reported.

Just before midnight, emergency crews with the Asheboro Fire/Rescue Department, along with the Asheboro Police department and EMS were dispatched to a report of a gas explosion at the West Pointe Village shopping center on NC Hwy 49.

First responders arrived to find the occupants of Coach’s Neighborhood Grill and Chu’s Express safely outside having already evacuated. Witnesses said they heard a loud boom before exiting the building.

Emergency crews discovered extensive damage in both establishments and determined the explosion likely originated from a gas leak involving cooking equipment at Chu’s Express. The blast pushed a shared wall several inches into Coach’s, damaging ceiling tiles and insulation.

Piedmont Natural Gas was called and shut off gas to the building. No fire resulted, and the timing of the incident meant few staff were present.

Coaches reopened Monday with limited seating while repairs continue. Chu’s Express remained closed, with a handwritten sign on the door reading, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are closed for renovations. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to serving you again soon!”

The total cost of damage remains undetermined, and the investigation is ongoing.
