Billy Lee Spencer

SEAGROVE — Billy Lee Spencer, 84, of Seagrove, NC, died on Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on Dec. 6, 1940, to Alfred and Annie Spencer.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025, at Union Grove Baptist Church, 7912 Union Grove Church Road in Seagrove, NC, with pastor Arnold Luther officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall until 4:30 p.m. Burial will follow the visitation at Whynot Cemetery.

Mr. Spencer was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alfred Alex Spencer Jr. (Berta Mae), Samuel Edward Spencer (Carol), and Walter Lewis Spencer (Mildred); and sisters, Magdalene Spencer Tucker (Elsie), Iredale Spencer Miller (John), Pearl Spencer Ferree (Randleman), Doris Spencer Beauchamp, Peggy Spencer Williams (Vance) and Linda Spencer Weatherly (Bruce).  

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sue Richardson Spencer, of Seagrove; his children, Ric Spencer (Amy) of San Mateo, CA, Cindy Spencer Young (Matt) of Montreat, NC, and Julie Spencer Raynor (Archie) of Durham, NC; grandchildren, Ivy Young, Zoe Spencer, Spencer Young, Katie Spencer, Cecilia Young Bright (Eli), and Reynolds Young; great-granddaughter, Lucy Bright; and sister, Shurby Spencer Cagle (Max) of Seagrove.

He graduated from Seagrove High School in the class of 1959 before attending Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, NC. He served as a teacher, coach and administrator in the Randolph County Schools for 48 years, impacting generations of students with his undaunted optimism and ability to bring out the best in people.

Known for his acts of kindness, he lived a life of service motivated by his desire to imitate his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was an avid Duke basketball and Dodgers baseball fan, but his greatest love was his family.
