COLERIDGE — Laurie Eugene Hiatt, Sr., 92, of Coleridge, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, after a long and full life.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, Ramseur, with Mike McCorquodale and Wally Jarrell officiating.
Interment will follow at Deep River Baptist Church, Ramseur.
Laurie was born on Sept. 21, 1930, and was named after his two grandfathers, Laurie Walton Marshall and Walter Eugene Hiatt.
Whether you knew him as Laurie, Eugene or Gene, he was Dad to Debbie, Sandy, Joyce, Kathy and Laurie. He was Papa, Grandpa or Poppy to numerous grandchildren, and was Gene to his Lillie, who passed away in 2012.
Laurie was one of nine children born to Jesse Clifford and Ruth Marshall Hiatt. He was proud of his military service and served his country as a U.S. Marine (“the Toughest Man in Fox Company”).
He retired from Klopman Mills/Burlington Industries & Ramtex in Ramseur with more than 35 years of service.
He was of the Baptist faith, was saved and later baptized in a pond by the late Rev. Hayes Ritter. He was a life-long reader, enjoyed Westerns, Carolina Basketball, the Atlanta Braves, fishing and sharing stories of his life.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Lillie Kidd Hiatt; daughters, Jo Anne Hiatt and Deborah Hiatt Taylor; grandson, Jacob Eugene Taylor; siblings, Virginia Hiatt Marley, Frances Hiatt Ritter, J.C. Hiatt, Jr., Tommy Hiatt, William Hiatt; sons-in-law, Donnie Taylor and Bruce McNeal.
He is survived by his daughters, Sandy Jarrell (Wally), Joyce McCorquodale (Mike), Kathy McNeal; son, Laurie Eugene Hiatt, Jr. (Robin); sister, Fay Hiatt Bedell of Columbus, NC; brother, David Hiatt of Silver Valley, NC; and by many nieces and nephews.
He was blessed with three generations of grandchildren who are beyond sad at his passing. He will sorely be missed.
Visitation will be from 1-1:45 p.m. on Saturday at Loflin Funeral Home in Ramseur.
