CARTHAGE — Harold Dewey Matthews of Carthage, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
He was born on Jan. 25, 1945, to the late Dewey and Bonnie Lillie Boyte Matthews.
Harold is also preceded in death by his son, Craig Matthews; sister, Ruth Matthews Taylor; and brother-in-law, Johnny Maness.
Harold was a devoted husband, having shared 34 loving years of marriage with Marion Brisson Matthews. He is survived by his children, Robert Matthews of Winston-Salem, Keith Horner of Carthage and Jennifer (Ben Nuckols) Matthews of Carthage; sister, Clara Lee Maness of Asheboro; and his three grandchildren, Lillie Wessman, Olivia Wessman and Jack Nuckols. Harold loved to tell folks about the love and pride he had for his children and grandchildren.
He was a Freemason for 50 years and was a member of the Carthage Lodge #181. Harold was a highly sought-after Bituminous Engineer with the Department of Transportation for 43 years and even into his retirement.
He was an avid gardener and looked forward to hand-picking his corn every year. His warmth, sense of humor and unwavering dedication to family will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Harold lived faithfully and sought his guidance daily from the Lord's word. Harold biked an extraordinary amount of miles throughout his years and will surely be biking along the streets of Heaven.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, April 21, 2025, at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage from 5-7 p.m.
A funeral service for Harold will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Cool Springs Church in Glendon at 2 p.m., with Preacher William Cashion officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery.
