HOWARD THOMAS HINSHAW

CHARLOTTE — Howard Thomas Hinshaw was born in Mount Airy to Quaker parents Seth and Mary Edith Hinshaw.

For 12 years of his youth, he lived in Asheboro while his father was pastor of Asheboro Friends Meeting.

He graduated from Guilford College in 1960 and attended UNC School of Medicine, where he met Virginia, his future wife and mother of their three girls. Howard’s medical training in endocrinology and internal medicine led the young family to Charlotte and the Nalle Clinic, where he spent 27 years and had a loyal endocrine practice before retiring in 2000.

Howard served on the Boards of both Guilford College and Friends Homes in Greensboro. He enjoyed reading, gathering with friends, woodworking and carpentry, and rebuilt a 1900s cottage to serve as the family retirement home. The local Quaker congregation, Charlotte Friends Meeting, benefitted from his many talents from woodworking to property maintenance to service as Clerk of Finance.

Howard’s family includes Virginia, his wife of 58 years; brother, Waldo; sister, Helen Shore; daughters Beth Hinshaw, Karin Hinshaw and Jennifer Adair.  He delighted in his eight grandchildren: Andrew, Parker, Evan, Nathan, Crosby, Leo, and twins William and Thomas.

We are grateful for the many lives he touched and for the many friendships that enriched his and our lives along the way. Planning for a Celebration of Life in under way;  in the meantime, we welcome favorite memories of Howard via email at Hinshawfamilycharlotte@gmail.com.
