Jessie Thomas Lethco, affectionately known as “Tom,” passed away on May 14, 2025, in Chatham County, NC, at the age of 83.
Born on May 28, 1941, in Randolph County, Tom departed this world doing what he loved best, riding the roads. You never knew where you would see his "famous" old green Toyota truck, puttering along.
Tom's early years were spent in the construction industry, but he was most well-known for his long-standing career owning and operating Lethco Tree Service. His skill in climbing trees, a talent that rivaled the agility of a cat, served him well in his work.
Known for tackling difficult projects, Tom once accepted the formidable task of raising and leveling the railroad depot in Jackson Springs, NC, as part of a historical renovation.
Beyond his work, Tom was a man who lived life with a lighthearted spirit, always ready with a joke or mischievous prank. His playful antics, including making cat noises, earned him the nickname "Tom Cat."
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Jane Lethco; his parents, Vernon and Bessie Freeman Lethco; grandparents, Ira and Annie Jean Freeman; son Michael Rowell; daughter Kim Craven; brother Harold Lethco; sister Shelby Brown; and grandsons Tony English Jr. and Daniel Rowell.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his son Terry Rowell; daughters Beth Murphy and Leah Harris with her husband Bruce; 11 grandchildren; a multitude of great-grandchildren; brother Vernie Thomas with wife Pat; sister Hilda Sanders with husband Boots; and family friend Johnny Ballew. Tom will also be dearly missed by his Robbins Diners Club family and many other friends and relatives.
In honor of Tom's love for celebrating birthdays, a celebration of his life will be held on what would have been his 84th birthday, May 28, 2025, at 3 p.m. at Big Oak Christian Church, located at 3627 Bensalem Church Rd., Biscoe, NC 27209. All are welcome to attend and share their favorite memories of Tom.
Though he may no longer travel the roads of this world, Tom's spirit and laughter will echo in the hearts of all who knew him.
Midstate Cremation and Funeral Service in Asheboro is honored to assist the family of Mr. Jessie Thomas Lethco.
