Jo Ann Surratt Painter, age 87, passed away peacefully on Jan. 3, 2025, at the Randolph Hospice House.
Born on Oct. 27, 1937, in Guilford County, she was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend.
Jo Ann grew up in Farmer, North Carolina, and was a proud graduate of Farmer High School, class of 1956. She dedicated much of her life to nurturing others, first through her work in childcare and later at the Caraway Conference Center, where she touched many lives with her kindness and compassion.
An avid reader, Jo Ann found great joy in the pages of books, which transported her imagination to far-off places. She loved visiting the beach and spending serene days by Badin Lake, as well as cherished trips to see her family in Florida.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Jerry Painter; her parents, John Ephraim and Elsie Conn Surratt; and her brothers, Joe Surratt and Dickie Surratt.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold her memory dear: her daughter, Jill Painter and her husband Hank Maddux; her sisters, Jessie Hoffner and Ruby Campbell, both of Alachua, FL; Inez Creger of Carolina Beach, NC; Sandra Culp of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and her brother, Colonel "Bud" Surratt and his wife Judy of Interlachen, FL. She is also survived by her cherished grand-dog, Enzo, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a private service of remembrance at a later date to honor Jo Ann's life and legacy. Special thanks are extended to the caregivers at Asheboro Rehabilitation and Hospice of Randolph County for their compassionate care and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Randolph in Jo Ann's memory, ensuring that others receive the same gentle care that she did.
Jo Ann will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
Midstate Cremation & Funeral Service is honored to assist the family of Ms. Jo Ann Painter.
