ASHEBORO — Mrs. Marie Cross Boone, daughter of Marcie Garner Cross and the late Eugene W. Cross, born on Aug. 19, 1956, departed her earthly life on Aug. 18, 2021, at 4:07 pm at Randolph Hospice House after a brief illness.
Marie was a native of Asheboro, North Carolina, raised in the family home in the Greensboro Street community with her siblings and cousins of whom labeled her as a “Watch Dog” as she saw everything that went on, keeping them abreast of all happenings.
She joined Saint Luke United Methodist Church at a young age and remained faithful until her death, serving in many capacities to include Lay Leader, Lay Speaker, Staff Parrish Relations Committee, United Methodist Women and SL Gospel Choir. Marie loved the Lord and showed her love for the Lord through praise as she could not carry a conversation without speaking of His goodness. Marie demonstrated her faithfulness throughout her community as a member of community boards and involvement in various activities and endeavors assisting others in accomplishing their personal goals, some of these being the NAACP and The Boys and Girls Club of Asheboro.
Marie was a 1974 graduate of the Asheboro City School System, where she participated in Intramurals, Future Teachers of America, Spirit Club, Junior Jaycettes, Girls Chorus, Homeroom President and Treasurer. Marie was also a member of the National Honor Society. She furthered her education by attending Winston-Salem State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1978 with a B.S. Degree in Intermediate Education with a concentration in Reading and Math.
Marie was hired by the Asheboro City School System and assigned to Lindley Park Elementary School where she taught fifth grade for 33 years retiring in 2011. During her tenure, Marie was nominated three times and won Teacher of the Year, as well as she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators. She instilled into her students be all they can be by writing their vision by making it plain and in God’s time the vision will become reality. Marie inspired many during her teaching career not limited to her students, but her peers and parents gave her the upmost respect.
Her love for her family, church, students, friends and neighbors was unconditional, as she never met a stranger.
She married her college sweetheart Harvey C. Boone Jr. on May 24, 1980. Some of their fondest memories were visiting the beach and mountains with family. To their union two adorable daughters were born Nichole Patrice and Camille Dione.
Marie was preceded in death by her father, Eugene W. Cross Sr., and sisters, Burnetta Cross and Vanessa Jordan.
Marie leaves to cherish her memories: her husband of 41 years, Harvey C.
