SOPHIA — Morris Allen Rice Sr., 85, of Sophia, passed away July 22, 2024, at Hospice of Randolph.
He was born Dec. 18, 1938, in Bryson City, to David “DM” Monroe Rice and Grace Owenby Rice.
Morris was a 1957 graduate of Asheboro High School and veteran of the US Marine Corps. Even though he retired as a machinist from Eveready Battery Company, he worked as a fireman, policeman, detective and in security.
He had many joys in life but had a passion for fishing.
Nothing was more important than enjoying his family and hearing laughter from his children and grandchildren.
He will be remembered for his love of Christ and attending Amity Hills Baptist Church faithfully.
Morris is survived by his children: Morris Allen Rice Jr. (Judy), Phillip Gray Rice (Gina), Ginger Rice Serniak (Walter), Misty Rice Long (Brad) and Julie Rice LaVelle (Ren); 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Michael Rice (Rockie); and sister, Jo Ann Cox (Kritz).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jannette Rice.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. at Old Union Methodist Church, 5077 Walker Mill Rd., Sophia. Full Military honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
