January 14, 1931 – June 28, 2024
GREENSBORO — William Elbert Moffitt (Bill) passed away peacefully on Friday, June 28, 2024, in Greensboro, NC, at the age of 93.
Bill was born in Charlotte, NC, on Jan. 14, 1931, the son of the late Camille and Elbert Moffitt.
A native of Charlotte, NC ,and Forrest City, NC, Bill graduated in 1952 from Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, NC, with a BS in Chemistry and minors in Physics and Mathematics. While at Wake, he was involved with the Student Council and the Honors Court, played the drums in the marching band, and was a member of the Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity.
After graduating from WFU, Bill went to work for Union Carbide’s National Carbon Division, known today as Energizer Holdings, as a Quality Control Engineer. He would go on to have an illustrious career with Energizer Holdings for over 40 years and his career would end up taking him all over the world as the Managing Director of Production Operations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Bill truly cherished his “Eveready” family and enjoyed attending the work reunions over the many years.
Bill met the love of his life, Camilla Eckard, while on a trip to Myrtle Beach, SC. They were married on Aug. 16, 1958, and celebrated their love for each other for over 64 years. They were blessed with a daughter, Patti, and a son, Pete.
While working with Energizer Holdings, Bill and Camilla made their home in Charlotte, NC, Asheboro, NC, Cleveland, OH, and Red Oak, IA, but upon retiring, they moved back to Charlotte. Together, they enjoyed working in the yard and tending to their rose and vegetable gardens, being active members of Myers Park Baptist Church and Olde Providence Racquet Club.
Sports were always an integral part of the Moffitt family. Bill and Camilla loved attending Wake Forest football and basketball games as a family and were Deacon Club Members for over 60 years. Tennis was an enduring passion, and they loved their trips to Wimbledon and the French Open. Bill played USTA throughout his life and was a very accomplished tennis player.
Bill truly treasured his family and enjoyed the annual family trips to Garden City Beach, SC. He loved Hershey’s Miniatures, Stamey’s Barbeque, chocolate milkshakes and Giant Jenga. The Thanksgiving dressing and candied yams will never taste as good as when he made them. We will greatly miss Bill’s wisdom, his willingness to listen and his distinctive cheer of “GO DEACS”!
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Camilla Eckard Moffitt; son, Peter Kenneth Moffitt; sister, Frances Moffitt Smith O’Connell; brother, Major Robert B. Moffitt; and sister, Betsy Moffitt Flack.
He is survived by daughter, Patti Moffitt Stavrolakis; son-in-law, Alex Stavrolakis; and daughter-in-law, Susan Gunter Moffitt (Joe Carroll) of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Allie Stavrolakis (Philip Casey) of Washington, DC, Christopher Stavrolakis of Denver, CO, Hastings Moffitt and Mary Layton Moffitt (Thomas Bullock) of Charlotte, NC; and sister-in-law, Jean Fuller Moffitt Reavis of College Station, Texas.
