ASHEBORO — More than 100 friends helped Hazel Anderson celebrate her 100th birthday on Jan. 3 at the Fellowship Hall of Asheboro’s First United Methodist Church.
The widow of the late local attorney Hugh Anderson actually turned 100 on New Year’s Day, 2026. Her celebration was hosted by her three sons, Craig, Roger and Paul.
The special event included remarks from former mayor David Smith (past Parkview Street neighbor) who reminded folks that Hazel and her late doubles tennis partner Martha Norman brought honor to Asheboro by capturing a gold medal in the Senior National Olympics in 1993 in Baton Rouge, La.
Among those wishing Anderson a happy 100th birthday were Nancy Hoskins, who once drove for Hazel when her eyesight was failing; Snowdene Beane, who was Anderson’s hairdresser for some 50 years; and Joyce Harrington, a former neighbor.
Anderson currently lives at Brookdale in Durham.
