A baseball heavy week for Spring Break

Outside of baseball tournaments, it was a quiet week in sports. But there was a lot of noise in those tournaments. Here are the highlight:



Asheboro's Jerquarius Stanback was named to the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association All-State team.  The Appalachian State University commit averaged 24.6 points and 11.3 rebounds a game in his senior season. 



*Jake Lunsford had two hits and Brady Armfield singled in a run as Southwestern Randolph beat Westchester Country Day 4-3 in the Zookeepers Classic. Ryan Jones got the win in relief with 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out three.

*Walker Wilkins walloped a three-run triple, Trey Kennedy had an RBI double and Grat Dalton had two hits in Uwharrie Charter’s 12-1 rout of Southern Alamance in the Zookeepers Classic. Jake Hunter pitched a five-hitter with three strikeouts.

*Jake Riddle pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts as Randleman beat South Stanly 6-0 in the Beach Diamond Invitational at West Brunswick. Riddle also had a double and two RBIs. Seth Way had a double and two RBIs. 

*Carlos Cordero, Alex Kivett and Rayden West each had a hit and RBI in Eastern Randolph’s 6-3 loss to South Central in the Battle for the Big Rock in Morehead City. Bryson Marley and Samuel Asbill each had two hits.

*Jayten Beasley, Canaan Shepherd and Jacob Flinchum combined on a one-hitter as Providence Grove beat Byrd (W.Va.) 7-0 in the South Atlantic Beach tournament in Myrtle Beach. Beasley also had two hits. Andrew Thomas had a double and two RBIs. Riley Gaines had two RBIs. Sheppard had an RBI single.

*Marley was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs in Eastern Randolph’s 7-6 loss to Person in eight innings. West had two hits. Cade McCallum and Kivett both singled in a run. 

*Way hurled a four-hitter with four strikeouts and went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs as Randleman routed East Forsyth 12-2 in five innings in the Beach Diamond Invitational. Riddle had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. John Kirkpatrick had a hit and two RBIs. Tate Andrews had two hits and an RBI. Caden Lasley had a hit and RBI. 

*Ben Luck had a solo home run and single in Asheboro’s 4-1 loss to Williams in the Zookeepers Classic. Amare Godwin also had two hits.

*Grant Kirk had two hits and two stolen bases in Southwestern Randolph’s 11-1 loss to Southern Alamance in the Zookeepers Classic. 

*Rowan Wagner had a triple and RBI in Wheatmore’s 2-1 loss to Jordan-Matthews in the Zookeepers Classic. Sean Jennison allowed one earned run and struck out four.

*Walker Wilkins had four hits and four RBIs as Uwharrie Charter routed Montgomery Central 15-5 in the Zookeepers Classic. Alex Carver had two hits and two RBIs while Trey Kennedy smashed a two-run homer. Logun Wilkins had a three-run triple. Carter Brown had two hits, including a triple. Brett Smith allowed five runs in five innings.

*Parker Kines and Jonathan Heraldo combined on a four-hitter as Wheatmore beat Montgomery Central 6-0 in the Zookeepers Classic. Kines struck out nine in four innings. Heraldo pitched three hitless innings with six strikeouts. Ayden Byrd was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Caleb Coggins belted a home run and had two RBIs. Jennison had a triple and RBI. Clay Hill had two hits and two stolen bases. 

*Luck had a pair of doubles and an RBI in Asheboro’s 13-6 loss to Southern Alamance in the Zookeepers Classic. Camden Walker, Shane Immel and Cohen Caviness all had two hits. Immel and Caviness each doubled in a run.

*Jonah Campbell had two hits and an RBI in Southwestern Randolph’s 15-2 loss to Williams in the Zookeepers Classic. Zach Scruggs also had two hits and Thomas Hogan hit a sacrifice fly.

*Flinchum had two doubles and three RBIs as Providence Grove rallied for a 7-6 win over Waccamaw (S.C.) in the South Atlantic Bank Invitational. Thomas had a two-run triple and Beasley had a pair of hits. Trevor Kirkman pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts and got the win.

*Luck collected three hits, including a double and triple, to go along with four RBIs as Asheboro swatted Jordan-Matthews 13-1 in the Zookeepers Classic. Immel had two hits and two RBIs while Aiden Robinson also got two hits. Adam Curry pitched a five-inning three-hitter with one unearned run and three strikeouts.

*Trey Mitchell had a two-run triple, Lucas Usterbowski had an RBI triple and then scored the winning run on a wild pitch as Wheatmore rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to beat Westchester Country Day 7-6 in the Zookeepers Classic. Ayden Byrd struck out six and allowed one unearned run in three innings of relief to get the win.

*Logan Fox had two hits in Providence Grove’s 10-4 loss to Lugoff-Elgin (S.C.) in the South Atlantic Bank Invitational. Riley Gaines and Jacob Flinchum each had an RBI single.

*Logun Wilkins was the winning pitcher as Uwharrie Charter blanked Montgomery Central 9-0 in the Zookeepers Classic.



*Addie Flinchum threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Eastern Randolph walloped North Davidson 9-0.
