A look back at the first week of fall sports season

Outside of football, which begins this Friday, high school sports got in full swing last week. Here’s a look at some highlights from the opening week.

 

VOLLEYBALL

*Addie Morgan led the way with nine kills as Providence Grove swept East Davidson 25-23, 25-18, 25-12 in non-conference action to open the 2024 season. Riley Mazzarone had 14 assists while Mailey Way contributed 13 digs and Cheyenne Collins served 4 aces.

*Kaitlyn McCoy pounded 9 kills to go along with a pair of blocks as Trinity routed Central Davidson 25-14, 25-17, 25-10. Karrington Batten had 8 kills, 7 aces and 3 blocks. Avery Moffitt also had 8 kills and added 4 aces. Avalynn Johnson had 18 assists and 9 digs. Faith Powell had 13 digs and 3 aces.

*Emory Johnson contributed 26 assists and 15 digs in Uwharrie Charter’s 25-11, 25-17, 25-9 sweep of Chatham Charter. Anna Brewer had 7 kills and Kayden Faglier had 6.

*Lia George and Emma Kate Forester each had eight kills in Asheboro’s 25-13, 25-15, 25-8 sweep of Wheatmore. Ada Scherer had 7 kills and 3 blocks while Forester added 5 aces and 3 blocks. Anna Grace LeRoy had 16 assists and Eva Vuncannon had 10. Emma Ingold had three aces.

Ashley Swaney led Wheatmore with 21 digs while Hayli Cox had 3 kills and 23 blocks. 

*Gracie Hodgin amassed 22 kills and 25 digs in Southwestern Randolph’s 14-25, 21-25, 25-16, 27-25, 15-8 loss to Oak Grove. Kinlin Hulin had 10 kills. Bailey Blackmon contributed 9 kills and 7 blocks. Maddie Baker had 29 assists while Giannie Small had 20 digs. 

*Caroline Way had 15 kills, 7 digs and 5 aces as Uwharrie Charter throttled North Davidson 25-12, 25-15, 25-16. Faglier added 7 kills and Brewer had 6. Emory Johnson had 24 assists, 6 digs and 4 aces.

*Kynnedi Routh had 11 kills, 19 digs and a pair of aces in Wheatmore’s 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22 loss to Chatham Charter. Lanie McMahan had 6 kills, 15 assists, 3 blocks and 3 aces. Madeline Mullinix had 7 kills and 4 blocks. Gracie Heiney had 18 assists, Swaney got 19 digs and Cox served 4 aces.

*Batten pounded 18 kills, 5 blocks and a pair of aces in Trinity’s 16-25, 25-15, 25-19, 28-26 win over Ledford. Moffitt did almost as much with 16 kills, 5 blocks and 2 aces. McCoy had 10 kills, 14 digs and 4 aces. Johnson had 42 assists and 12 digs while Powell got 17 digs.

*Kaylee Phillips 8 kills while Hailey Hinshaw had 7 kills, 17 digs and 2 aces in Randleman’s 25-11, 25-23, 25-23 win over North Davidson. Camden Scott 7 kills and 9 digs while Kadie Green got 22 digs. Camyrn Vickery had 32 assists and 6 digs. Mollie Hall had 5 kills and Ava Jones had 4. Natalie Roach had 6 digs and 2 aces.

 

SOCCER

*Jaydon DeNamur scored both goals in Uwharrie Charter’s 2-1 victory over Lexington to open the 2024 season. Juan Martinez had an assist and Victor Nino made 10 saves.

*Dakota Ludwick, Lou Ortiz and Carter Queen scored the goals in Wheatmore’s 4-3 loss to East Davidson. Avery Plummer had an assist.

*Jaylen Aquillina scored three goals and Queen tallied a pair in Wheatmore’s 10-1 rout of North Stanly. Sawyer St. Clair, Owen Bailey, Shaheer Fayaz, Owyne Bryson and Easton DeWitt all had one goal. Laurel Ortiz had two assists while Plummer and St. Clair each had one.

*Juan Uscanga scored the goal and Cam Letterlough provided the assist in Asheboro’s 1-0 win over Ashley.

 

TENNIS

*Lexi Owen, Jillian Cox and Ashlynn Harbor won in singles for Southwestern Randolph in the Cougars’ 5-4 loss to South Davidson. The team of Cox and Harbor won in doubles.

*Harbor won a singles contest in Southwestern Randolph’s 8-1 loss to North Stanly.

*Scarlett Kyle and Emily Hamilton won in singles in Southwestern Randolph’s 7-2 loss to Oak Grove.

 

GIRLS GOLF      

*Megan Oakley shot a 42 to earn medalist honors for Providence Grove as the Patriots beat Asheboro 137-180 at Holly Ridge. The Patriots’ Anna Holloway shot 47 and Aubne Goodman had a 48.

 

BROOKS BRANNON UPDATE

*The former Randleman star was 1-for-3 for the Salem Red Sox in an Aug. 10 game with Delmarva. He was 0-for-3 on Aug. 11 and 0-for-4 on Aug. 14 against Fredericksburg. Brannon went 2-for-8 in two more games with Fredericksburg. He was batting .256 with 4 home runs and 18 RBIs as of Aug. 16.

 

PEYTON WILLIAMS UPDATE

*The former Post 45 pitcher threw a scoreless inning against York (Pa.) on Aug. 10 and a scoreless inning versus Staten Island on Aug. 14. Williams allowed a run in one-third of an inning on Aug. 15. He was 1-2 with a 6.00 earned run average as of Aug. 16.
