A week full of highlights included a baseball one-hitter, a big week for Mollie Bulla, 10 more goals for Ellie Garrison, a tennis title for a freshman and, in a sign of respect for two soccer players’ careers, a pair of pre-arranged goals in an AHS-SWR soccer game.
Here’s a look at those and many more.
Baseball
— Rayden West had a run-scoring single in Eastern Randolph’s 4-3 win over Southern Guilford. Lucas Smith doubled and scored two runs. Alex Kivett, Bryson Marley, Chance Holdaway and Smith all pitched for the Wildcats.
— Parker Kines pitched a five-hitter over six innings with nine strikeouts as Wheatmore edged Providence Grove 2-1. Jonathan Heraldo pitched a scoreless seventh inning to get the save and Clay Hill had two hits.
Logan Fox had a triple and single for Providence Grove. Andrew Thomas allowed four hits and two unearned runs with 10 strikeouts in six innings.
— Troy Carver, Trey Kennedy, Landon Zephir and Alex Carver all had run-scoring singles as Uwharrie Charter outlasted Southwestern Randolph 8-7. Walker Wilkins had two hits. Jake Hunter gave up eight hits and three earned runs in six innings.
Jake Lunsford had three hits for Southwestern Randolph. Brady Armfield smashed a home run, got a single and two RBIs. Carson Coltrane had a double, single and three RBIs. Zack Scruggs had two hits while Austin Harvell had a hit and two RBIs.
— Connor Adams threw a dominant one-hitter, facing one batter over the minimum, with 17 strikeouts as Asheboro whipped Montgomery Central 9-0. Adam Curry contributed at the plate with a two-run double. Shane Immel had two hits and two RBIs. Cohen Caviness also had two hits. Amare Godwin had a triple and two RBIs.
— Caviness went 3-for-3 with an RBI as Asheboro completed the sweep of Montgomery 6-1. Adam Curry and Immel each had a hit and RBI. Curry threw a three-hitter with five strikeouts over five innings. Gavin Allen pitched two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts.
— Samuel Asbill had a hit and three RBIs as Eastern Randolph rallied from deficits of 7-1 and 8-7 to beat Trinity 10-9. Rayden West had a two-run double and Lucas Smith doubled in a run. Cade McCallum allowed a run in two innings of relief to get the win.
Jason Brown had two hits and three RBIs for Trinity. Andon Simmons had a two-run double.
— Jacob Flinchum smashed a home run and had two hits altogether as Providence Grove downed Wheatmore 6-1. Fox had two hits and two RBIs. Canaan Sheppard also had two hits. James Ellis had a hit and two RBIs. Jayten Beasley pitched a five-hitter with three strikeouts over six innings. Trevor Kirkman pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Caleb Coggins had two hits and an RBI for Wheatmore. Ayden Byrd struck out 10 in 6 1/3 innings.
— Troy Carver had three hits, including a double, and five RBIs in Uwharrie Charter’s 14-2 romp over Southwestern Randolph. Trey Kennedy smashed a two-run homer, Caleb Stickle had three hits, Walker Wilkins had a hit and RBI and Jake Hunter had a hit and RBI. Brett Smith scattered nine hits and struck out eight.
Grant Kirk and Armfield each had two hits and an RBI for Southwestern Randolph.
Softball
— Macie Crutchfield pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts, but Southwestern Randolph fell 3-2 to 3-A power Oak Grove. Kami Dunn and Crutchfield got the only hits for the Cougars. Maddie Strider and Crutchfield scored on wild pitches.
— Nauttica Parrish, Micah Wilson, Jayden Alexander, Savannah Holleman and Dunn got hits in Southwestern Randolph’s 8-0 loss to Mount Pleasant.
— Savannah Roman smashed a two-run homer, lifting Randleman to a 3-2 win over Providence Grove. Saniyah Deloatch had a hit and RBI. Kinzie Ivey pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and had a double at the plate.
Gracie Smith had two hits and two RBIs for Providence Grove.
— Katelyn West came on in relief to throw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in six innings as Uwharrie Charter blanked Wheatmore 7-0. Mollie Bulla pitched a scoreless first inning. Bulla also smashed a two-run homer, her fourth of the season. Emory Smith had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Gracie Smith had two hits and two RBIs.
Adalyn Boles went the distance for Wheatmore, allowing five earned runs and striking out 10.
— Bulla pitched a two-hitter over nine innings with 13 strikeouts as Uwharrie Charter and North Stanly played to a 0-0 tie. Emory Johnson had two hits for the Eagles.
— Leela Von Der Hey had four hits, including three doubles, and three RBIs as Providence Grove outscored Northern Guilford 15-8. Kolbi Jo Lineberry also had four hits. Devon Kelly had three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Ruby Caudle had a double, single and three RBIs. Gracie Smith had two hits, including a double, and RBI. Lara Wiseman had a two-run double and Callie Lambert had a run-scoring single.
— Addyson Dees had two hits in Randleman’s 9-0 loss to McMichael.
— Kaylie St. John smashed two solo home runs among her three hits as Randleman beat McMichael 7-6 in 10 innings. Ivey had a double, single and two RBIs. Lyric Chriscoe, Kaylee Phillips and Dees each had an RBI single. Dees also hurled 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to get the win.
— Kylie Hemric was 3-for-3 with five RBIs in Wheatmore’s 21-1 rout of Trinity. Arielle Turgeon was also 3-for-3 and had two RBIs. Adalyn Boles had two hits and three RBIs. Savannah Heiney had a triple, single and two RBIs. Kiayla Burnette had a double, single and two RBIs. Maddie Nichols smashed a home run and had four RBIs. Skylar Pittman smashed a home run and had two RBIs. Carmen Turgeon pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts.
— Bulla pitched a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Uwharrie Charter edged Southwestern Randolph 4-3 to secure the program’s first conference championship in softball. Aubrie Kauffman had a single and two RBIs while Kenzie Hill had two hits, including a double, and RBI. Jayla Hurley had two hits.
Hayleigh Thompson had a triple for Southwestern Randolph. Crutchfield allowed two earned runs and struck out six.
Soccer
— Bridgett Diaz Lopez and Jaira Arellano scored the goals as Asheboro turned back Montgomery Central 2-0. Itzel Macias and Abby Becker got the assists. The Blue Comets outshot Montgomery Central 27-2.
— Natalie Bowman scored three goals and Ellie Garrison tallied a pair as Wheatmore blanked Randleman 7-0. Ashley Swainey and Kynnedi Routh got the other goals. Bowman also had two assists and Lucy Lockwood got the shutout.
— Alma Garcia, Macy Allred and Alaina Kidd scored the goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-2 win over Randleman. Kidd had an assist and Sarah Kluba made seven saves.
— Arellano scored both goals in Asheboro’s 2-1 win over Oak Grove. Chloe Chanmaly and Becker got the assists while Carlisle Dozier made 17 saves.
— Garrison scored eight goals, giving the NCHSAA career scoring leader 45 for the season, as Wheatmore overwhelmed Thomasville 15-0. Garrison also had three assists. Bowman had four goals and two assists. Rashiya Raiford, Maggie Messner and Tatum Wagner each scored one goal. Lockwood made two saves.
— Arellano scored the winning goal as Asheboro beat Southwestern Randolph 2-1. There were two pre-arranged goals. Asheboro keeper Dozier was allowed to dribble down the field and score the only goal of her career. In return, Southwestern Randolph’s Macy Walker, who was out her entire senior season with a torn ACL, was allowed to dribble for a score.
Golf
— Wheatmore’s Ryan Marshall shot a 38 for medalist honors and the Warriors edged Uwharrie Charter by one stroke in a PAC match at Siler City Country Club. Uwharrie Charter’s Brodie Lambeth was second with a 41 while Randleman’s Ashton Dillon shot 42. Ashton Turner of Southwestern Randolph and Grayson Earls of Trinity both shot 43.
— Eastern Randolph’s Tyler Gee shot a 43 to finish third in a tri-match with Jordan-Matthews and Southwestern Randolph at Siler City Country Club.
Tennis
— Wheatmore’s Silas Jessup defeated Trinity’s Dominic Payne 6-3, 6-4 to win the PAC tournament singles championship. Southwestern Randolph’s Rodolfo Fiscal beat Wheatmore’s Avery Plummer 6-0, 6-2 for third place. All four players advanced to the regional tournament.
The Providence Grove team of Carson Jones/Lawver beat Trinity’s team of Spencer May/Kwame Mathole 8-3 to win the PAC tournament doubles championship. Trinity’s team of Cohen Crotts/Moises Ventura beat Randleman’s team of Ramiro Vences/Dylan Diaz 8-4 for third place. All four teams advanced to the regional tournament.
Track & Field
— Southwestern Randolph’s girls and Randleman’s boys won the team titles in a four-school meet.
Winning for the SWR girls were the 4x100 relay, Gracelyn Hodgins (400 meters) and Kiersten Litell (100-meter hurdles).
Winning for the Eastern Randolph girls were Mirianna Corea (discus, shot put) and Callie Craven (triple jump).
Winning for the Randleman girls was Ava Jones (high jump).
Winning for the Randleman boys were the 4x100 relay, Triston Chriscoe (100 meters), Luke Richardson (200 meters), Quincy Bethea (110-meter hurdles), Ty Moton (discus, shot put), Chase Farlow (long jump) and the 4x200 relay.
Winning for the Southwestern Randolph boys were the 4x200 relay and Caleb Shelton (high jump).
Winning for the Eastern Randolph boys was Caden Revelle (400 meters).
— Asheboro competed in an MPC meet at North Davidson.
Winning for the Asheboro girls were Jalaya Showers (100 meters, 200 meters), Nyla Price (100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles), the 4x100 relay, Rebecca Wilson (high jump) and Sion Murrain (long jump).
Winning for the Asheboro boys were Valentino Mark (100 meters – 10.94 seconds, 200 meters), Kai Matthews (400 meters, long jump), Michael Mark (110-meter hurdles), Dakarius Alston (300-meter hurdles), the 4x100 relay, the 4x200 relay, the 4x400 relay, Elijah Woodle (high jump), Aaron Tyson (pole vault) and Boone Hinesley (discus).
