AHS, ER, Tigers off to hot starts

Asheboro thumps Albemarle

D.J. Scott ran 28 times for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Asheboro opened the season with a 38-14 rout of Albemarle. Quincey Lee had 93 yards on 6 carries and also ran for a pair of touchdowns.

Quarterback Landon Laughlin was 8-of-14 for 149 yards and a touchdown. Aiden Robinson had 2 catches for 49 yards and a touchdown while Trevor Cassidy had a 57-yard reception.

Mitch Garcia kicked a 31-yard field goal and was 5-of-5 on extra points.

Defense carries Providence Grove

Jackson Summey and Holden Swift each returned an interception for a touchdown in Providence Grove’s 33-14 win over East Davidson.

Jackson Lawver threw two touchdown passes — one each to Jacob Flinchum and Jackson Rhyne. Brady Collins had a rushing touchdown.

Wheatmore loses close one

Jonathan Kelly ran for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns in Wheatmore’s 27-20 loss to West Davidson. One of his touchdown runs covered 71 yards.

Quarterback Connor Benton was 6-of-10 for 53 yards and an interception.

Trinity falls to Starmount

Leyland White had 3 catches for 24 yards in Trinity’s 43-0 loss to Starmount.

Randleman shuts out Thomasville

Quarterback John Kirkpatrick threw three touchdown passes in Randleman's 28-0 shutout of Thomasville.

Eastern Randolph romps in opener

Kobe Walker ran for a touchdown as Eastern Randolph romped past Eastern Alamance 29-0 to open the 2024 season.

 

Eastern announces  latest Hall of Fame class

Eastern Randolph’s selection committee has announced its 2024 Hall of Fame Inductees. The committee chose these individuals for their services while at ER as student/athletes and for continued support for the school and its athletic community. 

This class will be inducted on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at Burton Cates Stadium. ER will be hosting Parkwood High School.  

The new members are: Dwight Thomas (1979), Eric Hall (1982), Jeff Patterson (1982), Darren Beasley (1999), Kim Burgess (1999), James Lowe (1999), Joshua Moore (2006) and Bonika Terry (2007).

 

VOLLEYBALL

*Lara Wiseman pounded 7 kills while Peyton Whitaker and Addie Morgan had 6 in Providence Grove’s 25-18, 25-13, 25-13 sweep of East Davidson. Kailey Brown contributed 18 assists and Cheyenne Collins added 9.

*Hayli Cox led the way with 9 kills, 6 blocks and 5 aces as Wheatmore overcame Jordan-Matthews 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 26-24. Kynnedi Routh also had 9 kills to go along with 32 digs and 3 aces. Lanie McMahan had 14 assists, 6 blocks and 5 aces. Ashley Swainey had 40 digs, Gracie Heiney had 14 assists, Madeline Mullinix had 4 blocks.

*Camryn Vickery produced a triple double of 44 assists, 11 aces and 10 digs in Randleman’s 20-25, 26-28, 25-20, 14-25, 17-15 loss to Northern Guilford. Camden Scott had 17 kills while Ava Jones got 12 kills and 3 aces. Haley Hinshaw had 10 kills and 13 digs and Mollie Hall had 5 kills. Kadie Green had 21 digs and Natalie Roach added 12.

*Kaitlyn McCoy had 11 kills and 5 aces in Trinity’s 25-8, 25-11, 25-12 rout of Southern Guilford. Karrington Batten and Avery Moffitt each had 8 kills. Batten also had three blocks. Avalynn Johnson got 31 assists.

*Emma Kate Forester had 7 kills and 6 blocks in Asheboro’s 25-6, 25-21, 25-18 sweep of Eastern Randolph. Lia George had 5 kills, a block and an ace. Emma Ingold had 5 kills and 3 aces. Ady Sherer had 4 kills and 7 blocks. Anna Grace LeRoy had 13 assists, Emma Little had 12 digs and Eva Vuncannon had 11 assists.

Katelyn Brown paced Eastern Randolph with eight kills. Cora Sparrow had 3 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. Mirianna Corea had 2 kills and 2 blocks 

*McCoy pounded 19 kills and served 4 aces in Trinity’s 15-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 win over Southeast Guilford. Faith Powell had 14 digs and Johnson had 37 assists.

*Hinshaw put together a double-double of 10 kills and 18 digs along with a pair of aces in Randleman’s 25-18, 25-16, 25-14 sweep of North Davidson. Scott had 12 kills, 7 digs and 3 aces. Jones added 6 kills and 3 aces. Vickery set up the offense with 29 assists while Green had 11 digs and 4 aces. Roach had 7 digs and 2 aces. Hall added three kills.

*Caroline Way had 9 kills and 9 aces as Uwharrie Charter swept Richmond County 25-19, 25-13, 25-12. Emory Johnson had 23 assists, 5 digs and 3 aces. Kayden Faglier had 7 kills and 3 blocks. Anna Brewer and Morgan Lowe both had five kills.

*Sherer had 7 kills and 8 blocks in Asheboro’s 25-12, 25-20, 25-19 sweep of Wheatmore. Forester was also strong at the net with 6 kills and 11 blocks. Little had 18 digs, George had 11 and Ingold got 10. LeRoy had 18 assists while Vuncannon contributed 16 assists and 4 aces.

Kynnedi Routh had 8 kills for Wheatmore and Lanie McMahan had 11 assists.

*Gracie Hodgin pounded 14 kills while Kinlin Hulin had 12 kills and 8 blocks in Southwestern Randolph’s 16-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-17, 15-11 loss to Watauga. Cheyenne Dixon had 4 aces and 14 digs. Hodgin also got 14 digs. Madilyn Baker had 18 assists and Hailey Kennedy had 16. 

 

SOCCER

*Cam Letterlough scored three goals as Asheboro edged Western Alamance 4-3. Ozmar Martinez scored the other goal and Win Smith had two assists.

*Fernando Hernandez Dominguez and Aaron Avina both scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 4-1 win over Jordan-Matthews. Braydon Tyl had two assists while Yael Rebollar Ortiz and Hernandez Dominguez each had one. Jonathan Perez Dominguez made five saves.

*Jaylen Aquellina, Carter Queen and Sawyer St. Clair scored the goals in Wheatmore’s 3-1 victory over East Davidson. Shaheer Fayaz had an assist. Michael McNamara was credited with 8 saves and Logan Hughes had 4.

*Avina and Tyl scored the goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 2-1 win over Bishop McGuinness. Kevin Garcia and Noah Freeman got the assists. Dominguez was credited with five saves.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

*Arabella Shortridge of Asheboro Hybrid Academy was second in the 5K run at the Run at the Farm Cross Country Invitational in Denton. 

 

TENNIS

*Audrey Frazier, Caroline Tidwell, Abby Greeson, Liz Shoe and Alisa Shaw won in singles as Providence Grove beat Southwestern Randolph 8-1. The doubles teams of Frazier/Tidwell, Maya Barber/Greeson and Reece Davis/Shoe swept the doubles.

Larson Kelly won in singles for Southwestern Randolph.

 

BROOKS BRANNON UPDATE

*The former Randleman star went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Salem Red Sox in their game with Lynchburg last Thursday. As of Aug. 23, Brannon was hitting .256 with 4 home runs and 20 RBIs for Salem.

 

PEYTON WILLIAMS UPDATE

*The former Randolph County Post 45 pitcher was 1-2 with a 5.46 ERA for the Long Island Ducks as of Aug. 23. Williams had three consecutive scoreless relief appearances last week.
