AHS, RHS, UCA volleyballers start strong; AHS, SWR open with victories in soccer

And we’re off.

Even before football began and school even started, athletes were sharpening their preseason wares in girls volleyball and boys soccer and tennis. Here are some highlights from last week’s season-opening volleys, kicks and returns.

Volleyball

■ Caroline Way had 25 kills and 14 digs as Uwharrie Charter beat South Rowan 3-1 (25-14, 27-29, 25-10, 25-16) to open the 2025 season. Emory Johnson had 42 assists while Sadie Upchurch had 20 digs. Megan Becker had 9 kills and 7 blocks.

■ Lilah Covington had 15 kills and 6 aces in Randleman’s 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 11-25, 25-14) win over Providence Grove. Karrington Jones got 10 kills while Lexi Vaughn had 9 kills, an ace and a block.

Adalyn Whitaker led Providence Grove with 7 kills, 4 aces and 2 blocks. Kolbi Jo Lineberry had 5 kills, an ace and a block. Cheyenne Collins had 3 aces.

■ Lia George had 12 kills and 14 digs as Asheboro swept Jordan-Matthews 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-20). Emma Kate Forester had 11 kills, 3 blocks, 5 digs and 2 aces. Kailey Brown had 9 kills, 10 assists and 4 digs. Emma Ingold had 16 kills, Eva Vuncannon had 23 assists, and Haley Macon had 9 assists. Cora Little added 6 kills, 5 aces and 9 digs. Ady Scherer contributed 4 blocks.

■ Avery Moffitt had 9 kills and 6 digs in Trinity’s 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-23) loss to Southeast Guilford. Dakota Odell had 6 kills while Bryn Holden had 5 kills and 5 digs. Avalynn Johnson had 20 assists and a block. Charlee Phillips got 9 digs and 3 assists. Cadence Mortensen had 3 aces and Haley Cox had 3 blocks.

■ Alexis Hollifield had 11 kills, 22 digs and 4 aces as Wheatmore swept South Davidson 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-14). Madeline Mullinix had 5 kills and 4 aces. Lanie McMahan added 11 assists and 2 aces. Peyton McCauley had five assists.

■ Cox had 14 kills and 4 blocks in Trinity’s 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-20, 25-18) win over North Carolina Leadership Academy. Moffitt had 8 kills, 3 aces and a block. Odell had 8 kills, 4 aces and 2 blocks. Mya Hooker had 6 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Johnson had 28 assists, 6 digs and 4 blocks. Phillips had 7 digs and 2 assists.

■ Adalyn Whitaker had 8 kills, 6 aces and 2 blocks in Providence Grove’s 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-16) sweep of Chatham Charter. Lara Wiseman and Kolbi Jo Lineberry both had 7 kills. Callie Hodges had 20 assists and Cheyenne Collins had 14 assists.

■ Cox had 7 kills and 2 blocks in Trinity’s 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-13) loss to Oak Grove. Hooker had 6 six kills, a block and an ace. Moffitt had 5 kills and an ace. Johnson had 17 assists and Odell got 5 kills. 

■ George posted a double-double of 10 kills and 13 digs as Asheboro swept Wheatmore 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-13). Forester contributed 8 kills, 5 aces and 4 blocks. Little had 16 digs and 3 aces. Scherer had 6 kills and 4 blocks. Vuncannon had 20 assists. Brown had 13 assists, a kill and a block.

Hollifield paced Wheatmore with 16 digs and 4 kills. McMahan also had 4 kills along with a block and ace. Mullinix had 7 digs and an ace. Shyanne Rich also had 7 digs. Peyton McCauley had 10 assists, a kill and an ace.

Soccer

■ Ozmar Martinez, Ivan Castaneda and Alexander Diaz scored the goals as Asheboro beat West Brunswick 3-1. Carlos Gonzalez, Castaneda and Martinez had the assists.

■ Yael Rebollar Ortiz scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-1 win over Montgomery Central. Kevin Garcia got the other goal. Aaron Avina had two assists and Fernando Hernandez-Dominguez had one. Jonathan Perez Dominguez made five saves.

■ Carter Queen scored the goal in Wheatmore’s 5-1 loss to Glenn. Logan Hughes made 10 saves.

■ Saul Cortes scored three goals in Providence Grove’s 7-6 win over Southern Guilford. Seth Johnson tallied two goals while Sam Peters and Kevin Bautista each got one. Aldo Rubio, Johnson, Bautista, Cortes and Peters all had one assist.

Tennis

■ Tatum Wagner, Macy Tew and Reagan Stinnett won in singles as Wheatmore edged Asheboro 5-4. 

Madalynn Adams, Guadelupe Soto and Anson Frazier recorded singles wins for Asheboro.
