A look at American Legion action and some other high school sports news. 

AMERICAN LEGION 

- Braylen Hayes was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and 2 RBIs as Post 45 opened the season with a 16-1 rout of Mocksville-Davie. Josh Meadows smashed a two-run homer and Hunter Atkins went 2-for-2 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Tanner Marsh also had two doubles and two RBIs. Adam Cole had two hits and two RBIs. 

Drew Harmon scattered five hits and allowed one run in five innings with five strikeouts. Robert Garner and Marsh each pitched a score-less inning. 

- Post 45 fell 3-2 to Randolph County on a walk-off single. Post 45 scored both of its runs on an error in the third inning. Tyler Parks, Marsh and Cole each had one hit. Garner started and pitched four innings. Drake Purvis pitched in relief and took the loss. 

- Atkins had three hits, including a double and triple, in Post 45’s 6-5 win over Chatham. Cole two hits, including a dou-ble, and two RBIs. Marsh had two hits and an RBI. Parks had a hit and RBI. Connor Adams was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs with five strikeouts and six walks. Atkins and Marsh pitched in relief. 

 

MISCELLANEOUS 

n Asheboro’s Cristian Ortiz and Calvin Smith have been chosen to play in the East-West All-Star Game.  Ortiz led the Blue Comets with 36 goals. Smith has signed with Chowan. 

- Western Carolina’s Ryan White was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team. The former Randle-man star was 5-0 with a 3.86 earned run average, the lowest on his team. White made 20 appearances, all but one in relief. 

- UNC-Greensboro’s Luke Thomas was also named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team. The former Providence Grove standout was 4-4 with a 5.82 ERA and 2 saves.
