Asheboro knocks off defending state champs in soccer

Another busy week in prep sports was highlighted by Asheboro’s second soccer victory over defending state champions.

 

SOCCER

 

Christian Cruz and Brandon Santos scored the goals as Asheboro remained undefeated with a 2-1 win over reigning 1-A state champion Christ the King. That’s the second defending state champion the Blue Comets have beaten this season, winning 4-0 over the reigning 3-A champion Western Alamance in August.

 

Cruz scored another goal while Diego Bustamante and Ozmar Martinez also scored in Asheboro’s 3-0 win over Uwharrie Charter.

 

*Riley Queen scored the goal in Wheatmore’s 1-0 win over Ledford.

 

Cooper Phillips scored two goals in Wheatmore’s 10-1 thumping of South Davidson.

 

VOLLEYBALL

 

*Haley Pease had 12 kills, 4 aces and 4 digs in Wheatmore’s 25-10, 25-13, 26-24 sweep of Eastern Randolph. Haley Greene contributed 17 assists, 5 digs and 2 aces for the Warriors. Lanie McMahan added 9 aces, 8 digs and 5 assists.
 

*Camden Scott and Mollie Hall each had five kills in Randleman’s 25-22, 25-13, 19-25, 25-15 loss to Southwestern Randolph. Gabi Carter had 9 digs and 4 kills. Kenzie Roach had 11 assists and 11 digs. Karli Kennington had 23 digs and 3 assists. Camryn Vickery had 6 assists and 5 digs.

 

*Chloe Painter had 9 kills and 2 blocks in Uwharrie Charter’s 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 victory over Trinity. Dacia Lowery got 7 kills and 2 blocks. 

 

Kaitlyn McCoy had 13 digs and 12 kills for Trinity. Madison Burgiss had 18 assists, 9 digs and 4 aces for the Bulldogs. 

 

*McCoy had 13 kills and 7 digs to lead a balanced effort as Trinity beat Southern Guilford 25-15, 25-11, 25-12. Sarabeth Johnson had 10 kills and 5 aces. Faith Powell had 7 digs and 5 aces. Burgiss had 24 assists. Natalie Franco had 4 kills and 2 blocks.

 

*Lizah Moore had 11 kills and 3 blocks in Uwharrie Charter’s 15-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 win over Randleman. Lowery had 6 kills and 6 blocks. Painter had 4 kills, 4 blocks and an ace. Anna Brewer got 4 kills and 2 blocks.

 

Chloe Dixon led Randleman with 10 kills and 14 digs. Carter had 13 digs and 6 kills. Roach had 15 assists and 13 digs. Kennington had 16 digs.

 

*Riley Mazzarone had 34 assists while Emma Mazzarone pounded 16 kills in Providence Grove’s 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 loss to Southeast Guilford. Mailey Way had 18 digs for the Patriots. Dyyanna Wade had 8 kills and 4 blocks.

 

Riley Mazzarone had 32 assists and Emma Mazzarone had 16 kills in Providence Grove’s 25-22, 25-23, 25-15 win over Trinity. Allie Frazier had 15 digs.

 

GIRLS GOLF

 

Asheboro’s Salem Lee put together yet another stellar effort, shooting a 36 to earn medalist honors in a Mid-Piedmont Conference match at Lexington Golf Club.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

 

Wheatmore’s Zach Hazelwood took first place in the Millennium Charter meet held at Fisher River Park in Greensboro. Hazelwood’s time was 18:05.71.
