As football and soccer end for Randolph County teams, the winter sports take center stage. Plus, the Mid-Piedmont Conference announce award winners for the fall sports.
Here’s a look at some highlights from last week’s action and local news.
Boys Basketball
- Nazir Staton scored 21 points in Trinity’s 64-57 victory over South Davidson. Zy Holmes contributed 17 points while Jackson Lee posted a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds. Walker Parrish had nine points.
- Parker Kines scored 16 points and had 5 assists as Wheatmore slipped by West Davidson 57-56. Wyatt Stepp scored 14 points and Truman Auman had 14.
- Elijah Woodle led the way with 17 points as Asheboro pounded Southwestern Randolph 65-42. Jewell Barrett-Riggins and Zak Blackwell each had 10 points while Osiris Rodriguez had 9. Brayden Chapman led Southwestern Randolph with 14 points and Zach Bruce had 8.
- Holmes scored 25 points and Staton had 15 in Trinity’s 64-58 loss to Jordan-Matthews. Lee had eight points. n Kines scored 16 points in Wheat-more’s 62-53 loss to Chatham Charter. Finley Bryant had 14 points. Weston Driggers had 9 points and 7 rebounds.
Girls Basketball
- Gracie Beane led three players in double figures with 15 points as Randleman cruised to a 59-20 win over Asheboro. Addyson Dees had 12 points and Jaqueline McDaniel added 11. Adalynn Scherer led Asheboro with 12 points.
- Nevaeh Staples scored 15 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 53-49 win over Bethany. Lainey Thomas and Naimah Al-Arif each had 14 points.
- Maddie Strider poured in 23 points as Southwestern Randolph swamped Asheboro 64-23. Jordin George and Ryleigh Hineline each had 10 points. Macy Allred added nine points. Scherer led Asheboro with 12 points.
- Madison Hill scored 18 points and Ava Nance had 12 in Trinity’s 45-25 win over Jordan-Matthews.
Wrestling
- Trinity swept Orange (68-18), Overhills (81-24) and Western Alamance (75-0) in a quad match.
Aiden Burkholder, Stephen Cross, Edgar Vasquez, Kayden Hess, Simeon Hammet, Jayden Henry, Zane Schloemer, Lawson Coltrane and Joseph Trahan were all 3-0 for the Bulldogs.
- Uwharrie Charter swept Central Davidson (64-11) and West Davidson (74-4) in a tri-match. Paxton Kearns, Caleb Saldana, Michael Hardie, Ric Riccardella, Brandon Jordan, Lorenzo Alston, Dakken Rodriguez, Caden Bond, Michael Shropshire, Jesse Bowles and Ayven Virasone Chitavong were all 2-0 for UCA. Ayden Bryson was 1-0.
- Southwestern Randolph beat Providence Grove 47-23. Winning for Southwestern Randolph were Emmitt Lewis (132), Kevin Juarez (138). Michael Jaimes (144), Nathan Garner (150), Ayden Walker (157). Erick Rabadan Lopez (175), Dominic Ross (190), Cordy Foland (215) and Jose Flores (285).
Jeremiah Payne (106), Tyler Williams (113), Aiden Poplin (126) and Mitchell Freeman (165) won for Providence Grove.
- Eastern Randolph beat Randleman and lost to South Davidson in a tri-match.
Lucas Kennedy, David Lambright, Trevor Crabtree and Jamie Crabtree were all 2-0 for Eastern Randolph. Jesus Gordillo-Robinson was 2-0 for Randleman.
- Uwharrie Charter swept St. Pauls (76-6), Scotland (76-6), Lumberton (43-13), Purnell Swett (71-12) and Western Harnett (66-9) in the Scotland Duals.
Kearns, Saldana, Brennan Worrell, Aiden Foster, Bond and Chitavong were all 5-0. Huntley Adcock, Alston and Shropshire were all 4-0. Preston Tillie and Hardie were both 1-0.
- Asheboro’s Estoban Santos (2nd, 106), Berik Bigelow (3rd, 132), Alexan-der Patino (4th 150) and Quentez Butler (4th, 215) placed in the Cedar Ridge Invitational.
Freeman won for Providence Grove at 165. Randleman’s Alex Raymundo was third at 113.
- Asheboro beat Page (62-16) and Randleman (56-23) while falling to Montgomery Central (65-18) in a quad at Randleman.
Owen Chidester, Quantez Butler, Berik Bigelow and Oscar Zelaya were all 3-0 for Asheboro.
Alex Raymundo (3-0) and Jonah Sturdivant (2-0) were undefeated for Randleman.
- Trinity’s top finishers in the West Rowan Invitational were Burkholder (1st, 106), Vasquez (1st, 120), Schloemer (1st, 157), Trahan (1st, 285), Cross (2nd, 113), Omega Edge (2nd, 126), Allred (2nd, 150), Coletrane (2nd, 165) and Hess (4th, 132).
- Wheatmore’s top finishers in the Enka Invitational were Dominic Hittepole (2nd, 190), Dykan Harris (5th, 106), Spencer Moore (5th, 150) and Noah Browning (5th, 215).
Tennis
- Asheboro’s Blair Thomas was named Player of the Year in the Mid-Piedmont Conference.
Also making all-MPC from Asheboro were Malaika Khan and Charlotte Smith.
Volleyball
- Lia George and Emma Kate Forest made the all-MPC team from Asheboro.
Boys' Soccer
- Asheboro’s Cam Letterlough was named Player of the Year in the MPC after having one of the greatest seasons in North Carolina high school history while helping lead the Blue Comets to the 3-A state championship game.
Letterlough’s 78 goals led the nation and is the fourth-best single season total ever in the state. The Blue Comets’ Braulio Gutierrez was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Also making the all-MPC team from Asheboro were Giovanni Nunez, Daniel Gutierrez, Ozmar Martinez, Cristian Raygadas, Diego Bustamante and Andres Valladares.
Football
- Asheboro’s Logan Laughlin, Connor Brinton, Chris Spivey and Dallas Brinton were named to the all-MPC offense.
The Blue Comets’ Jewell Barrett-Riggins, Cole Trogdon, Luke Hughes and Israel Saunders were named to the all-MPC defense.
