Volleyball wraps up its regular season and heads into conference tournament time while soccer continues for another couple of weeks before the playoffs start. Here’s a look at reported highlights from last week.
Volleyball
- Lia George provided 11 kills, 16 digs and a block in Asheboro’s 25-16, 25-10, 25-17 sweep of Ledford. Emma Kate Forester had 9 kills and 4 blocks. Ady Scherer added 7 kills and 3 blocks. Emma Little had 23 digs while Eva Vuncannon had 14 assists and 2 aces. Anna Grace LeRoy had 16 assists and 3 aces.
- Lara Wiseman had 17 kills to lead a balanced effort as Providence Grove rallied past Eastern Randolph 25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-12. Maggie Freeman had 13 kills and 2 blocks while Peyton Whitaker had 12 kills. Addie Morgan had 11 kills and a block. Mailey Way had 56 digs and 3 aces. Kailey Brown had 30 assists and Riley Mazzarone had 28. Cheyenne Collins served five aces.
Mirian Corea had 8 kills and 4 blocks for Eastern Randolph. Cora Sparrow had 7 kills and 9 blocks. Kenly Whitaker had 42 assists and 4 kills. Kaitlyn Brown had 30 digs and 7 kills.
- Camden Scott had 14 kills and 2 blocks in Randleman’s 15-25, 25-14, 25-20, 26-24 win over Trinity. Haley Hinshaw had 10 kills and 4 aces. Mollie Hall had 7 kills while Ava Jones had 6 kills, 5 aces and a block. Kaylee Phillips had four kills.
Kaitlyn McCoy got her 1,000th career kill and finished with 13 on the evening along with 2 aces and a block for Trinity. Karrington Batten had 18 kills and 6 blocks. Dakota Odell had 5 kills and a block while Faith Powell had 4 aces.
- George had 16 kills, 18 digs and 3 blocks as Asheboro outlasted Providence Grove 26-28, 25-16, 25-21, 14-25, 15-10. Forester also had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 blocks. Sherer had 8 kills and 7 blocks. Little had 30 digs and a pair of aces. LeRoy had 27 assists and Vuncannon added 21.
Wiseman led Providence Grove with 18 kills. Morgan had 7 kills and 2 blocks. Taryn Waugh had 6 kills. Freeman added 5 kills and a block.
- Bailey Blackmon had 9 kills and 4 blocks as Southwestern Randolph edged Pinecrest 25-27, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 17-15. Gracie Hodgin had 8 kills and 16 digs. Kinlin Hulin had 7 kills and 4 blocks. Jade Matias had 5 kills and 7 blocks. Cheyenne Dixon had 10 digs and 3 aces. Giannie Small had 15 digs while Hailey Kennedy had 21 assists and 14 digs. Madelyn Baker had 14 assists, 7 digs and 2 aces.
- Whitaker turned in a big performance with 31 digs, 38 assists and 3 aces in Eastern Randolph’s 25-17, 25-17, 24-26, 25-9 victory over Jordan-Matthews. Sparrow had 11 kills and 4 blocks. Callie Craven had 9 kills and 4 blocks. Corea added 8 kills and 2 blocks. Vivian Underwood had 37 digs and 4 aces.
- Morgan had 10 kills and 4 blocks in Providence Grove’s 25-16, 26-24, 23-25, 25-14 win over Wheatmore. Wiseman had 9 kills while Peyton Whitaker had 7. Way had 33 digs, Collins had 3 aces and Waugh had 22 digs. Mazzarone had 22 assists and Brown had 19.
- George had 10 kills, 18 digs and 4 aces as Asheboro swept Montgomery Central 25-20, 25-10, 25-20. Scherer had 9 kills and Forester had 7. LeRoy had 13 assists and 4 aces while Little contributed 20 digs. Vuncannon had 20 assists and 2 aces while Emma Ingold got 17 digs.
- Batten pounded 21 kills to go along with 2 blocks and 2 aces in Trinity’s 26-24, 25-14, 25-14 sweep of Eastern Randolph. McCoy had 12 kills and 4 aces. Moffitt provided 8 kills and 3 assists while Charlee Phillips had 21 digs. Avalynn Johnson had 32 assists.
Sparrow had 7 kills and 5 blocks for Eastern Randolph. Kenly Whitaker had 18 assists, 20 digs and a block. Craven had 5 kills and 2 blocks.
Soccer
- Yael Rebollar Ortiz and Aaron Avina both scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 8-0 blanking of Uwharrie Charter. Braydon Tyl, Kevin Garcia, Omar Moreno Gorostieta and Fernando Hernandez all scored one goal. Avina had two assists while Ortiz, Tyl and Hernandez each had one.
- Cam Letterlough scored four goals in Asheboro’s 6-2 victory over Ledford. Carlos Castaneda and Cristian Raygadas scored the other goals. Daniel Gutierrez and Diego Bustamante both had two assists. Castaneda and Letterlough each had one assist.
- Letterlough scored two goals, giving him 42 for the season, in Asheboro’s 3-2 win over Montgomery Central. Alexander Diaz got the other goal. Gutierrez and Bustamante each had an assist.
- Ortiz scored four goals as Southwestern Randolph overwhelmed Providence Grove 8-0. Jonathan Lopez Degollado, Alex Aviles, Avina and Fernando Hernandez all had one goal. Garcia had two assists. Gio Hernandez, Fernando Hernandez, Avina and Ortiz all had one aasist. Jonathan Perez Dominguez made two saves.
Tennis
- Asheboro’s Blair Thomas finished second in the Mid-Piedmont Conference tournament for the second year in a row and advanced to the 3-A Midwest Regional tournament. Thomas had defeated teammate Mady Adams in the semifinals. Adams also advanced to the regional tournament as did the Blue Comets doubles team of Malaika Khan/Charlotte Smith.
- Providence Grove’s Audrey Frazier won the PAC championship, defeating Trinity’s Deanna Cobb Wilson in the finals. Frazier advanced to the 2-A Midwest Regionals as did the other three semifinalists – Cobb, Jacey Wilson and Karla Rios. All three are from Trinity.
Wheatmore’s team of Tatum Wagner/Arielle Turgeon won the conference doubles championship over Southwestern Randolph’s Caroline Farlow/Larson Kelly tandem. Both teams moved on to the regional tournament. The other semifinal teams – Providence Grove’s Abby Greeson/Caroline Tidwell and Trinity’s Kayla Neam/Selina Arroyo – also advanced to the regional tournament.
Boys Cross Country
- Asheboro’s Alex Patino was fifth overall in a three-team race with Ledford and North Davidson.
- Uwharrie Charter edged Southwestern Randolph in a four-team event with Wheatmore and Anson. The Eagles’ Austin Luck and Chris White took the top two spots.
Rounding out the top five were Austin McMahan (Southwestern Randolph), Andrew Ormond (Southwestern Randolph) and Tyler McCormick (Wheatmore).
Girls Cross Country
- Wheatmore won a four-team event with Uwharrie Charter, Southwestern Randolph and Anson.
Uwharrie Charter’s Jazmin Palma was the overall winner. Rounding out the top five were Scarlett Hildreth (Wheatmore), A. Madison (Wheatmore), Victoria Jennings (Uwharrie Charter) and Emmie Messner (Wheatmore).
