Here is a look at last week’s results, including soccer playoffs and one team’s start to the basketball season.
Soccer
- Cam Letterlough and Diego Bustamante each scored two goals in Asheboro’s 5-1 win over Mooresville. Andre Valladares scored the other goal. Cristian Raygadas had two assists while Daniel Gutierrez, Letterlough and Bustamante each had one.
Letterlough ended the regular season with 64 goals.
- Letterlough scored five goals as No. 1 Asheboro routed No. 32 West Charlotte 9-0 in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs. Diego Bustamante and Diego Morales each scored a pair of goals for the Blue Comets. Ozmar Martinez and Bustamante each had two assists. Cristian Raygadas, Omar Alvarez, Gerrardo Medina Chi and Letterlough each had an assist. The five goals pushed Letterlough into fourth place for most goals in a season by a male soccer player in North Carolina.
- Fernando Hernandez scored 4 goals and had 2 assists as No. 1 Southwestern Randolph whipped No. 32 East Rutherford 8-0 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Aaron Avina had 2 goals and 2 assists for the Cougars. Braydon Tyl and Omar Moreno Gorostieta each got one goal. Jose Lopez Degollado and Yael Rebollar Ortiz each had two assists.
- Trinity, seeded No. 16, downed No. 17 Surry Central 3-0 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs.
- Randleman, the No. 13 seed, fell 1-0 to No. 20 Community School of Davidson in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs.
- Eastern Randolph, seeded No. 31, lost 6-0 to No. 2 Bradford Prep in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs.
- Jaydon DeNamur and Caleb Golden each scored two goals as No. 24 Uwharrie Charter surprised No. 9 Highlands in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs. Brayden Ferguson had an assist and Victor Nino made 10 saves.
Girls Basketball
- Nevaeh Staples scored 18 points and Emory Johnson added 11 as Uwharrie Charter beat Falls Lake Academy 58-47. Most of Johnson’s points came on a trio of 3-pointers. Lainey Thomas had 8 points and 6 steals.
