Copperheads 2022 season announced

ASHEBORO — There will be plenty of new teams and new faces seen around McCrary Park for the Asheboro Copperheads’ 2022 Coastal Plain League season.

Next summer’s schedule includes 48 CPL games, an increase of four from the 2021 season. Heading into its 26th season, the CPL will feature 15 teams across Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

The Copperheads will open the CPL season with a pair of road games on Thursday, May 26, at Forest City and Friday, May 27, at Holly Springs. The Copperheads’ home opener is scheduled for Saturday, May 28, at McCrary Park against Wilson.

Asheboro’s regular season includes home contests with Tri-City (June 18), the Spartanburgers (June 30), Florence (July 4), Peninsula (July 15) and defending CPL champion Savannah (July 25). The Copperheads also have home games with Holly Springs, Forest City, Wilson, High Point-Thomasville, Wilmington, Morehead City and Martinsville.

"We are very excited about the 2022 schedule," Asheboro General Manager Dennis Garcia said. "There will be a lot of new faces at McCrary Park and teams we haven't seen in quite a while. Those are always exciting games to look forward to.

“Coupled with games against our rivals, like Forest City, Martinsville and High Point-Thomasville, 2022 will be one of the top home schedules in Copperheads' history. "

The Copperheads have already scheduled home non-league games with the Fuquay-Varina Twins (the season opener on May 25), the Clayton Clovers of the Premier Collegiate League (June 17) and the Catawba Valley Stars (June 19). Other non-league games include home battles with never-before-seen foes, including the Boone Bigfoots (June 26, 6 p.m.) and the Carolina Disco Turkeys (July 26).

The league will return to a two division structure with two teams from each division making the playoffs (July 31-Aug 6).

The West will include Asheboro, Forest City, HP-Thomasville, Lexington County, Macon, Martinsville, Savannah and Spartanburg.

The East will be made up of Florence, Holly Springs, Morehead City, Peninsula, Tri-City, Wilmington and Wilson.

The 2022 All-Star Game and Scout Day will be held on July 10 with the location to be announced at a later date. The game will feature the East All-Stars taking on the West All-Stars and be preceded by a full scouting combine and USA Baseball’s Prospect Development Pipeline event to be attended by scouts and evaluators from across professional baseball.
