Defending 2-A state champion Southwestern Randolph defeated a team in first place in a 3-A conference this week in volleyball, while Asheboro thumped Ledford to take over sole possession of the Mid-Piedmont Conference in soccer.
Here are highlights from other non-football action going on this week around the county.
VOLLEYBALL
*In a rare battle between two area conference leaders, Madelyn Smith had 21 kills and 7 digs as 2-A/1-A PAC-7’s Southwestern Randolph beat 3-A Mid-Piedmont Conference’s Oak Grove 20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-14 in non-conference action. Raegan LeRoy had 37 assists and 23 digs for the Cougars. Gracie Hodgin had 10 kills while Coley Shiflet had 18 digs and 8 assists. Riley Key had 7 kills and 2 blocks.
*Julie Johnston had nine kills and a block as Southwestern Randolph beat Wheatmore 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 for coach Darby Kennedy’s 200th career win. Madeline Smith had seven kills and an ace. Key had 5 kills and 2 blocks.
Haley Pease led Wheatmore with 6 kills. Taylor Richardson had 5 kills and 2 aces.
*Paige Needham had 14 kills while Emma Mazzarone had 12 as Providence Grove outlasted Asheboro 20-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-11, 15-13 in a non-conference match. Dyyanna Wade had 7 kills and 5 blocks for the Patriots. Caitlyn Stephens had 5 kills and 5 blocks.
Ellen Long and Sara Hildreth each had 10 kills to lead Asheboro. Piper Davidson had 6 kills for the Blue Comets while Sion Murrain had 5 kills and 3 blocks.
*Davidson had 11 kills, 11 digs and 5 aces in Asheboro’s 25-18, 25-16, 25-16 sweep of Central Davdison. Hildreth had 13 kills, 9 digs and 2 aces. Long had 10 kills and 2 blocks. Kaylen Nance had 38 assists and 2 aces.
*Long had 11 kills, 5 blocks and 2 aces in Asheboro’s 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16 loss to North Davidson. Murrain had 6 kills and 2 aces. Davidson had 11 digs, 9 kills and an ace. Hildreth had 10 kills and an ace.
*Taghan Mooney had 6 kills, 7 digs, 14 assists and 5 aces as Wheatmore swept Lexington 25-15, 25-12, 25-8. Haley Greene had eight digs for the Warriors.
*Chloe Dixon had 29 digs and 15 kills as Randleman outlasted Uwharrie Charter 25-17, 16-25, 21-25, 25-14, 15-10. Gabi Carter and Camden Scott each had 11 kills for the Tigers. Haley Hinshaw had 23 digs and 3 kills. Kenzie Roach had 30 assists, 11 digs and 3 aces. Camryn Vickery had 14 assists and 8 digs. Mollie Hall added five kills.
Chloe Painter led Uwharrie Charter with 12 kills, 4 blocks and 2 aces. Anna Brewer had 10 kills and a block. Dacia Lowery had 5 kills and 3 blocks.
*Dixon walloped 26 kills to go along with 18 digs and 2 aces in Randleman’s 26-24, 17-25, 25-18, 25-23 win over Providence Grove. Roach had 39 assists and 13 digs for the Tigers. Scott had 14 kills and a block. Carter had 9 kills, 9 digs and 5 aces. Vickery had 16 assists. Kennington had 20 digs and 4 assists.
* Painter had 6 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces in Uwharrie Charter’s 29-27, 25-13, 25-21 loss to Bishop McGuinness. Lizah Moore had 4 kills and 4 blocks for the Eagles.
*Sarabeth Johnson had 12 kills in Trinity’s 25-15, 25-21, 25-21 loss to Central Davidson. Kaitlyn McCoy had 9 digs and 8 kills. Madison Burgiss had 18 assists, 5 digs and an ace. Karrington Batten had 5 kills and a block. Ella Johnson had 9 digs.
SOCCER
* Cristian Cruz scored a pair of goals as Asheboro (14-1) beat Ledford 4-0 to take over sole possession of first place in the Mid-Piedmont Conference.
Cristian Ortiz got a hat trick and had two assists as Asheboro whipped North Davidson 7-1.
*Fernando Hernandez scored a hat trick in Southwestern Randolph's 7-0 win over Providence Grove. Jonathan Lopez had a goal and three assists.
*Riley Queen scored a hat trick in Wheatmore’s 5-0 win over Providence Grove. Anakin Leister had a goal and two assists.
*Diego Torres scored two goals in Trinity’s 7-0 win over Eastern Randolph.
GIRLS GOLF
*Asheboro’s Salem Lee tied for medalist honors with a 38 in a Mid-Piedmont Conference match hosted by Ledford.
TENNIS
*Andee Bullard won in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as Southwestern Randolph beat Uwharrie Charter 9-0. Bullard ended the regular season 10-0 in conference play.
CROSS COUNTRY
*Wheatmore freshman Olivia Hildreth won the girls’ race in a meet with Randleman, finishing in a time of 26:31.
*Wheatmore’s Zach Hazelwood won the boys’ race in the Randleman meet. Hazelwood’s time of 20:31 was nearly three minutes faster than the runner-up.
